Bars above the top yoke.

Post by plivez »

I have adjusted the valves, balanced the injectors. That made a minor improvement to the vibes, but not much.

Tried thickening the grips by wrapping 8mm foam round the grips, again minor improvemnet, but not enough.

I have now put the bars above the top yoke. I think that has done the trick. :o Obviously the vibes are still there, but because I am not resting on them as much the vibes are much less noticeable, also more comfortable generally.

Recommend it. Zero cost! :)

Hopefully will save me having to change to a GS!

Did you have to use a longer brake line or do you have the ABS version that already has longer lines?

Standard line, non ABS 1998.
The brake line is pretty straight now, but not under any tension. Once onboard the suspension compresses and there is plenty of slack.

Good choice! I dispatched my S for 120'000 miles with the bars like that!

I Have now covered about 300 miles and can confirm that this has solved the problem of numb hands due to vibes.

Did 150 miles today and it was a pleasure. :D

It's quite easy to do, but initially I was a little confused.

I loosened off the bolts on the bars and top yoke, removed the bolts under the bars that go into the bottom of the yoke.

I then proceeded to try and pull the top yoke and bars off the forks.
This is wrong & impossible  .

Loosen the bars and yoke off, then pull / push the fork sliders down through the yoke and bars. Obviously the bike has to be on a main stand / paddock stand.

Once the forks sliders have been pulled / pushed down through the bars, you can remove the bars and place them above the top yoke. The top yoke does not move at all. Then pull the fork sliders back up through the yoke and bars.

Effectively you will have pulled the sliders out a further 25mm.

But only take one slider out at a time or you will be in all sorts of trouble according to barbacks website.

Looks Good.... the only down side is the anti rotation lugs and screw holes are exposed.

Can you post another picture with a virtually over head view.... I believe from reading other threads on this, that the bars do not creep if tightened correctly... but I would like to see the overhead look.

Your bars look pristine....is it a low mileage bike?? :?:

Cheers and thanks

Did you have to undo any of the cable ties or anything when raising the bars?

I don't think the bars look too bad with the lugs.
There has been no sign of any movement at all. Infact when I only hand tightened them I couldn't shift them, so torqued down with locktight I'm sure they will be fine.

Will take some overhead pics.

Bike has 20,000 on it.

No cable ties removed, no re routing at all. Mine is a 98 - 99 model without ABS.

Hi joe,i did mine on saturday as well(must be catching)and it's made an uncomfortable bike, back and arm ache,a pleasure to ride a 100 mile distance and i was worried that the front brake pipe would be to short and it's not, but it has got ABS which must have a longer pipe and it's made me a happy man!

I have a set of the official BMW bar raisers so now I know that I need to have a longer brake line and did not have to dismantle everything to find this out!
