Black sludge

Post by bernsmartco »

Drained what I thought should be oil from the rear diff and this is what came out.
What does this portend? :? (Sure I read something here but could not turn it up with search.)
Less than 5K on the clock so just as well I did it now - cant fell any sort of play or roughness.

While on the subject of oil change can some explain the trick of juggling very hot gearbox drain plug and similarly hot exhaust, scalding oil and plastic milk bottle. Is there anything in recommended product for removing oil from concrete.

I changed all the fluids this weekend, including the diff, and it was very black stuff that came out the diff this time. The diff was re-bearing'ed a few thousand ago after the other one disintegrated. I reckon (hope - the bike is shipped to the states next Monday) that this is just down to the new bearings bedding in - probably the same as yours if the bike has only done 5k. Like a baby's first dump - it's usually black till it's cleaned it's tubes

As for the other fluids - I personally bother to get the oil that hot before changing it - I just let it drip for longer instead. If you use a ball headed hex socket to remove the oil drain plug then you can avoid the rush of hot oil no problem. As for the g/box and diff, their oil is so thin anyway that I do them cold.
