Sidestands

Post by Harry »

Anyone done the switch from short to longer sidestand?
Anything I need to know?

I'm only asking cos one of the bolts is the frame to engine mount so I'm wondering if i need to jack up the lump - or will the centrestand suffice?
And what happens to the cut-out cable?

Ta,
Harry.

not tried it, but told by bm that to get the sidestand off you have to drill the bolt out as you will not undo it.. So sounds a bit like a pain in to be honest.
When can the Highway agency lay softer road coverings??

Now rides a mangled wreck... Ho Hum back to the K100

Did this change over at Chris's the other w/end.
Leave the base plate in place and remove the bolt that goes through the pivot point after removing the little circlip on top and the springs. You may need to gently heat the bolt head from underneath as mine had traces of loctite.

No need to touch the sidestand cut out wiring at all.

Harry,

It's a doddle. Shouldn't take you more than 5 mins tops:

1) unclip the two springs.
2) Remove the circlip, pull the cut-out switch out of the way, but note how the assembly fits over the top spring retaining post! This will save you doing the job twice when you reassemble and realise the cut-out switch doesn't anymore
3) undo the bolt holding on the stand. I didn't require heat or excessive force to do this, despite traces of loctite on the bolt
4) whip off the short stand and stick on the long stand.
5) refit other bits taking care to locate the cut out switch over the sprinfg retaining post.
6) Robert's your mother's brother.

Cheers,

Paul
You really need only two tools: WD-40 and duct tape. If it doesn't move and it should, use WD-40. If it moves and shouldn't, use the tape.

Lazy SOB method.

1) Take bike for 12k service and ask for long side stand to be fitted.
2) Collect bike and short side stand after paying sizeable sum of money.
Didn't even get my hands dirty.

Adam :D
Forgive me father for I have sinned... ex S owner moved onto pastures new with four cylinders and a chain... and back to a twin, albeit in a V.

If you change stands would suggest you buy a new retaining bolt at the same time (On sale or return if possible) as it would seem that some of the side stands have a different thread size, as I found to my cost when I did mine.

Does anyone know the length of the longer side stand?

Ditto....for some reason BMW changed the thread pitch on long and short length stands.I have fitted an allen bolt to mine and removed the cut out switch...which is now cable tied the the throttle body! The cutout switch is originally circlipped on to the top of the bolt and held in place by the aid of a locating pin....it's a pretty crappy idea...seems to collect all the crud from the road!
My longer side stand is showing signs of wear now.....I'm not sure if it's the base plate, bolt,or side stand that has worn.Bike leans over mucho!

Is this mod to reduce the vast amount of lean that makes the S such a bugger to park in london?

Ade,

Yup. It's designed for the bikes supplied with the sport length shocks (shame sh*t, just longer with a different colour spring  ).

Paul

That'll be on mine then (S Sport) I reckon its still too long compared with the Jap side stands which look as though they have all the strength and stability of a short drinking straw.

I suppose it means I don't have to pick the bike up after a moderate side wind (unlike me vespa..)
