r1150r vs r1100s for touring
I currently have a r1150r and have it set up for touring. Corbin, touring shield, luggage, back rest and many other goodies.
In recent times I have been a bit curious to changes things up a bit and like the looks of the 1100s (this is the ONLY other bike I'd consider). My main concern is comfort. Has anyone ridden a 1150R setup for max comfort/distance and an 1100S (6speed) set up the same way with corbin, taller screen, risers?
If so: How is the wind on your face/head? Long distance comfort as good? passenger comfort as good?
I'm 5'11" and weigh 160. I occassionally ride with a half shell helmet.
Simply put I want the "sexier" look and more horse power/speed but I don't want to sacrifice comfort compared to what I got. I'm just wondering if I got the 1100s and made all the comfort mods to it (do they even make a passenger back rest?) like bar risers, tall screen, corbin seat, ect.. will I be as comfortable as I am on my R.? I beat the hell out of my R- rev it up to redline, push it to 130mph but also sometimes ride w/o a full face and like not having a blast of wind on my face. Difference in ergos? I'm try to get my cake and eat it too- wondering if its possible.
Thanks so much for your advice.

Hi there,
As easy as it would be to "hype" the R1100s, for touring around Texas and surrounding areas - the R1150R is a hard machine to beat.
Some people describe the R1150R as "A GS on road wheels", and from people that use them extensively - that could be right.
I think most people find the R1100s a comfortable bike for full-day touring, but I suspect that the R1150R is even more so.
Pillions on the R1150R are catered for slightly better, I think in that the pillion seat isn't as elevated as the 1100s.
Why not have both??
There are many mods that you can do to the R1100s (Start with a BoxerCup Replica - they are far better
) that will ensure that you return home with a grin on your face, if you get out on twisty roads
(better shocks, etc)
Any help
Enjoy the R1150R in the meantime - a very accomplished touring bike.

Sugardoo,... you could shower the 1100S in Fariy Dust and buy it some Mink Knickers, but it will never have the comfort of the R. The advantage the R has over the S in comfort, far exceeds any performance advantage the S has over the R.

Re: r1150r vs r1100s for touring
No offence but I'll just stop you there, you are looking at the wrong bike, forget it; the S isn't going to do what you want it to do. You want sexier buy a Rockster, that's as close as you're going to get (imho) with your requirements.sugardoo wrote:I currently have a r1150r and have it set up for touring. Sugardoo,I often rode with a guy on trips who rode a R1150R and now rides a R1100S...
I would say the R1100S with high bar mounts and tall shield from the factory is more comfortable than the 1150R becaue of better wind protection and not having all the weight on your ass...
Looks better, better handling, more power, much more fun to ride...
The only advantage of the R a little easier to steer on twisty roads due to wide handlebar but you can also d a "superbike" handlebar conversion on the S,the two liter bigger tank and factory luggage rack but you can also get a rack from ventura for the S.
I would say,go for it!My ole lady is happy on the back,too...
Chris
PS:Or go for the new R1200R;almost R1200S performance and still the full BMW-usefulness,decisions,decisions....
