Oh no......carbon fibre help needed

Post by gordy »

Set off on a 350-mile 'four points of the compass' trip round Northern Ireland on Saturday. Having arrived safely at a mate's house at the end of the day I was just just parking the bike up when somehow - don't ask me how - I managed to lose my footing and...CRASH....ended up with the bike on its side and me under it :( . Couldn't believe it. Thankfully, the damage is limited to replaceable bits. I smashed the right hand rear indicator and mirror and scraped the cylinder head cover (it's an '04 BCR). What I'm wondering is whether or not it would be possible to repair the cylinder head cover or if I have to replace it? I haven't poked at it too much for fear of making it worse but it looks to me that the damage is confined to the lacquer and that - if it's possible - a rub down and re-lacquer might be enough to leave it looking ship-shape again. Does anyone know of a company or individual who takes on this sort of work? I have a photograph of it but, luddite that I am, I'm not sure how to upload a photo here. Right, I'm off to practice not (suddenly and without explanation) falling over. Cheers, G

Yeah - it hurts when you do something so simple that results in damage to an item that is made of "Unobtainium" :(

I had a couple of scratches on my covers when I bought the bike, and rubbed them down with wet'n'dry and then polished.

I would suggest the same, and if they need re-laquering - use an alloy wheel laquer.

I've now done 14K+ miles and road wear has dulled the finish - I'll need to polish them up this winter.

Al :D
If I am ever on life support - Unplug me......
Then plug me back in..........

See if that works .....

Ohhhh those carbon covers. Look great but why do they have to put them in such a vulnerable place. tried the bike with just the spark lead infill piece but it just doesn't look the same.

Anyway, if you are interested I found these on fleabay.

Thanks for your help folks. I guess I'll take a stab at repairing the damage (has to be worth a go) but keep a close eye on fleabay just the same. Cheers, g.

Sorry, I am away at INTERMOT at the moment, otherwise I would have replied earlier.

Rub down and relacquer may well work - it is certainly wrth a try.

For smaller marks try clear nail polish
