Which tank bag??

Post by leasky »

Thanks for all the advice thus far folks,it has been a real help and saved me a lot of time and money, not to mention heart-ache and gnashing of teeth. However, yet again I seek help;Tank bags........Looking to head for south of France this September and require nice, big tank bag.Already have full touring panniers but fear I may require more room for kilt, bagpipes, haggis and sheep etc (just joking). I have looked at both Baglux and the ones available through Winding roads.Being a Scot, not looking to spend a fortune, hope no more then 100 quid.Any pointers?? Thanks again, Leasky.

I would mostly go for Baglux - keep an eye on ebay and you might be able to get one cheap

leasky,

I have a Baglux Whopper bag and fitting kit for a 'S'. The bag fits on the rear seat with the aid of a fitting kit, it is rigid and waterproof. It is in excellent nick, and can be bought for £45 plus P+P, or if you are near Dunfermline come and collect it.

Thanks for the reply Andrew. Sounds a good offer. Was planning to take the other half with me though. Can this thing fit with her on the bike? Ps I am in Aberdoom but come to "The Kingdom" on a very regular basis. Clare is from Wormit and I work for FMC. Small world eh? Colin.

I have used a Baglux tank bag on my S for 5 years. I think it it the 12/15 litre Shibuya model with small front pocket; fine for day trip use and also for stuff you want close at hand whilst on tour. I am not a fan of large tank bags and feel that anything much larger (e.g. 30 litre baglux Alpha bag) on the S may interfere with sight of the clocks and control especially if doing a lot of Alipine hairpins.

If you look of E-bay you can often find a coloured or black Baglux bag for reasonable money. I picked one up for £30 last year. Probably have to buy the tank harness new unless you are lucky and find someone selling in the right colour. May be worth checking the Baglux website or phoning them as they often discount older harnesses (particularly if bike colours change) or have ex-demo bags going cheap.

Toured Europe plenty of times with the S panniers and tank bag. Plenty of space! Old adage is 'the more space you have the more crap you pack'. Be selective with your packing, pack a small bottle of travel wash and clothes which you can wash in the shower or basin and which dry overnight (e.g. Rohan or some of the travel clothes from Columbia or similar). Enjoy your tour.

Final thoughts, you could try the UKGS'er website. They seem to have quite an active For Sale board and I have seen Baglux bags listed.

Another option if to buy an Ortleib dry sack from Tiso or similar outdoor shop. Various sizes from 20 litres upwards. Good for bulky items and can be bungeed the rear seat. I often pack one of these bags flat into the bottom of my pannier just in case I have a mad buying spree on tour, or find the weather so hot I do not want to ride in a heavy bike jacket.

Thanks for all the help guys. I have decided to go for the Fenza from Winding roads. £85 including postage to Aberdoom,so not bad for the price. I saw a picture on here of it attached to a bike with a unique paint job and it looked good.
Once again though, thanks for all the advice and pointers. Leasky.

tank bags

Post by Al »

I have a baglux cover and an Alpha bag, I have only used it once and it seems to fit well back on the tank compared to where it fitted on the Suzuki . It was ok in the small size but it would be very awkward to ride properly if it was expanded to full capacity.

leasky,

See you have sorted yourself out, if you still fancy the idea of the tail bag, give me a shout.
