Something funny happened on the way to work...

Post by Graham G »

Took the R1100S to work as normal today. I was on a straight stretch of road, overtaking a few cars who were on the inside lane of the stretch of dual carriage-way I was on. I happened to glance down at the dials and was surprised to see the speedo fluctuating between 40-50mph. No way! I cannot figure out what this may be? Any suggestions would be welcome. Just prior to this happening, the bike felt like it actually lost power for a few minutes. A little worrying. :?

Also, the front right hand side disk looks really rusty; the left hand side one looks 'normal'. Why should one be more rusty than the other? The bike was new in 2004. Also, in the brakes there is a silver 'clip' near the break shoes. Are these supposed to get rusty really quickly? Just thought that if anything like this is a warranty issue, then I would like to get that done before warranty expires.

Thanks in advance. Only joined the group last week, but found it friendly and informative, so thanks for that.

Cheers,

Hi Graham, welcome to the nut house :D

Not sure about the speedo error but possibly the pick up in the rear bevel box - remove and clean.

RH disk possibly because it's the more exposed when on the side stand?

And, no the clips shoudn't be rusty but it's a BM, what do you expect?

All warranty claims as far as I'm concerned. Get back to Baldies (I'm guessing you got it there) and get it sorted out.

HTH

Adam :)
Forgive me father for I have sinned... ex S owner moved onto pastures new with four cylinders and a chain... and back to a twin, albeit in a V.

I had similar excitement with my speedo for a while... thought I was just really smooth on the throttle going from 30-60 with no effort. Turned out to be the connection under the seat.

As to the disks I had my right caliper seize up on me 3 times... Vines said that it was always the right side that seized but didn't know why. My personal theory is that it's more exposed when on a side stand, kept it on the main stand when parked for 9 months and no more seized disks. (I know yours isn't seized but could be similar reasons?)

Hi Graham

Speedo - like Andy says, pound to a penny it's the black connector under the seat. Mine went a while back and lots of others have too. The connections under the OS rear panel are all tortuously mangled in a ball of tightly cable tied madness and the little speedo wires seem to shear through at the connector - the (cheap) solution is just to ditch the connector block and connect the wires directly. My rear brake light connection has just gone the same way through the same problem.

Losing power - yep - mine used to cut out completely, usually on motorways, usually at very inopportune moments, then kick back into life. Eventually traced to more over zealous cable tied madness inside the NS fairing - the cable from the ignition switch had fractured somewhere. I'm sure Paul will be along with a picture soon as it's quite common again

Rusty disk - dunno - is the caliper jammed like Andy's and not in fact gripping the disk at all, allowing it to rust? And yep, the clips, and the little pins rust like buggery (and they're £6 a pop too  )

Replace the rusty brake pins with stainless socket cap head bolts trimmed to the correct size. Worked for me.
Oyster. 1999 R1100S. Almost original.

Same thing happened again today!

Yet another rainy day on the way to work. This time the speedo dropped from 60mph to zero - and stayed there. Back home and back on to Boxertrix.

Checked the wiring under the seat - seemed to be OK. The wiring is tight! But I think on this occasion it was Adam's suggestion of checking the speedo pickup in the rear bevel box. Whipped that off gave it a good clean and could see the MPH again. Fingers crossed :) I'm grateful for these forums.

Surely there is a lot to be said for a mechanical speedo pickup rather than an electronic one?

Thanks for the input on this one.

Graham
