Vibration - RH twistgrip

Post by madman »

Anyone have any clues on how to eliminate the high frquency vibration in the twistgrip? The bike is a one year old 6000 mile twinspark. It is getting so bad that my thumb and forefinger start tingling and go dead after about 20 miles.
I have removed the mounting bar from the Y piece, adjusted the valves, balenced the thottle bodies, checked all mounting bolts on the engine for tightness, changed the oil and still cannot get rid of it. Last night I removed the bar end weight and next time I go out will see if this makes a difference.
Has anyone else had this and ow did they solve it?

Seeing as you've done everything else what about new plugs? Might help.

Seeing as it's silly hot over there are you using 20W50 oil? Seems to be the recommendation for over 30 deg C. Not sure if this would affect things.

Apart from that, another 6k miles should do the trick.

Probably not much help, sorry.

Adam :)
Forgive me father for I have sinned... ex S owner moved onto pastures new with four cylinders and a chain... and back to a twin, albeit in a V.

As Adam says - carry on running it in.............or you could move to a cooler climate, them there S's don't like the warm weather

Well there's two things you need to do with an S,the first is to get it to breath, don't belive me!!! try sticking your hand over your mouth and your finger up you bum and see how well you operate!!!! Lennies Induct K+N open exhaust pipe.

The second is mileage you'll need at Least 10,000 on the clock, mine was absolute murder till i got past that distance and that was with Shell optimax and new plugs every 1500 miles,it's got 18 or 19 on now and it's proper!!!!

Thanks guys, I'll try new plugs and see if I can find some where to go to put another few thousand mile on her. I am sure I can think of somewhere.
I thought about moving to a cooler climate but if I returned to the UK then I woulsd have to pay road tax which we don't have here, get an MOT which we don't have on bikes here and pay 3 times as much for my insurance. Then I would not be able to use cheap 98 octane fuel, which seems to reduce the vibration a little.
I will update when I have found a cure (even if it takes 5000 miles!)

Purely psychological I know however I have recently treated mine with ZX1 Extralube (http://www.team-zx1.com/) and could swear that the level of vibration has reduced :) Bob

Did 50nmiles today with the bar end weight removed - no difference. I'll try thicker engine oil next.

Now there's a coincidence!

I would swear that the vibration on the right grip has been getting worse and the bike is now at 6000 miles and going for service next week - it made me wonder if it was related to valvegear adjustment?

As you say - numbs the hand in short order.

Anyway - spect I'll be able to tell next week.

Al :D
If I am ever on life support - Unplug me......
Then plug me back in..........

See if that works .....

Gents as i've said before less than 10,000 miles you haven't got a prayer, hence when people come on the board asking about buying one the advice is secondhand, thats why i smile when people jump up and down about the new S!!!! not bloody likely let some other mug run it in for you!!!!.

I rekon it can be down to holding the grip too tight myself. Hold it REAL TIGHT and see how much it really vibrates, then hold it really loosely and see. Consiously relax the grip and see if it makes any difference. Mind you, mine is nicely run in and it still shakes like an epileptic on speed

Not down to valve adjustment - tried that. I am suprised that the removal of the bar end weight makes no difference, why are they fitted in the first place? They are certainly heavy items.
Did a trip through the Pyrenees a few weeks back and all I can say is that the only things that I disliked on the trip were the twistgrip vibration and the heat. The bikes ran very well apart from that. I managed the heat by buying some bungees and strapping the leathers to back of the seat, and riding in shirtsleves.
I will try thicker oil next, I know of a local place that is selling 10W50 fully synthetic for around 20 euro. It will be a bit thicker when warm than the 10W40 semi synthetic that I am using now. The wifes bike is running vibration free on 5W40 fully synthetic but that has 25000 miles on it.

Now for the next episode! I changed the oil this morning as suggested, used the only 50 I could get which was 5/50 synthetic. Have just done a 50 mile ride and the vibration is almost gone. I will now be quite happy to bum around Europe for the next 6000 miles so that it will be run in.
Thanks for all the help.

bar vibes

Post by cc mac »

i bought some neoprene weight lifting gloves from argos for about 4 quid. they have loops for fingers and slip over summer gloves. winter gloves suffer less from vibes.
