Went on a very hot ride around the Trough of Bowland in Lancashire yesterday and noticed that there was some black stuff slowly dribbling from the drive shaft rubber. (Sorry to be so un-technical).
Is this due to the exceptionally hot weather (it was nearly 30dg) or might I have a problem?

Sounds like the pinion oil seal, about £5 in parts and £120 in labour
Mine went at 18k and was replaced again (FOC this time) at 26k ish along with the paralever bearings.
The heat probably helped the small amount of oil flow that bit further. No immedaite panic but it will get gradually worse.

Forgive me father for I have sinned... ex S owner moved onto pastures new with four cylinders and a chain... and back to a twin, albeit in a V.

Had mine replaced FOC outside of warranty (5 months) so it shouldn't be an issue. The BMW scrutineer at Oulton Park noticed it before we were let out for a couple of laps before the Boxer Cup race in 2003.

Phoned Williams BMW Manchester today and as you have all said - no quibble at all. We bought the bike in October 2004 so it is still covered by 12 months unlimited warranty. They did indicate that it would be done FOC in any case because of the age (early 2004) and mileage (7000mls) of the bike.
They also told me that there was no panic with the problem and that I would be OK using it for a bit. However I intend to get it booked in soon after I return from my hols.
Thanks for the replies.
