I bought a used R1100S in July from a dealer, I was told it was inspected before I collected it, (it did come with new tyres & throttle bodies) but I'm 1500 miles off the 24K service & the rear brake pads are down to the metal. Do you think the dealer should have spotted that the pads were low before the bike went out?
And before anyone questions my riding skills I do use the front brake as well as the rear.
Thanks
Also where is the best place to buy pads? (if I don't get any free ones from my dealer)
Me thinks you may be taking the piss a little if you ask for a new set of pads after 6 months of use.I imagine they were servicable at the time of inspection.EBC,carbon lorraine etc are all good alternatives to OEM.

I'm sure they were, but you would think there would be enough meat on them to make it to the next service. When I worked in a garage, the pads would be changed if they were getting low & would not last until the next service.
How long do bike pads last? I did over 70K on the front pads in my last car, I even bought a new set, but found the old ones only 2/3ds worn (still have them on the shelf, Toyota carina 2)
Bikes??? Cars??? two different way lengths,I'd say if your brakes had got enough meat on e'm to pass an MOT when you bought the bike thats fair enough, and you've already asked the question how long do pads last?? how longs a piece of string???
Originals which were in the bike when i bought it(6000 miles already)lasted till about 35000 miles. Then again,i hardly ever use the rear brake except at crawling pace.Thats the beauty of a high compression big twin, down a couple of gears and let the engine do the braking.

In hindsight, the warning signs were there, rear brake not very good at low speed, & a black deposit on the wheel rim that lines up with the disk, this must have been the pad material breaking up
You might want to check out the rear calliper to make sure its not sticking and that the retaining pin has some light lubrication. Quickest way to get through new pads is to have them constantly rubbing away.
