Pannier locks
Can anyone tell me how to remove the locks from the panniers?
I need to get the internals changed to suit a new ignition key.

Pidcocks my local dealer did mine for free, and I had bought the panniers off Motorworks.Mick Mac wrote:Can anyone tell me how to remove the locks from the panniers?

I assume it's the same way you take the ignition barrel out.
Put the key in the lock, then somewhere on outside there should be a pin hole. It'll be close to the bottom of the barrell somewhere. Stick a paper clip or similar in it to release the barrel and pull the whole lot out with the key.
Be careful to keep the key all the way into the lock until you've got the lock out. There are lots of small bits with springs that can fly out. When you've got the lock out take the key.

Re: Locks
Yes, I got mine matched when they were purchaseda-jay26 wrote:Can you make the panniers locks work from the main ignition key then??
Can I therefore get locks to fit my current ignition key, as my panniers work with their own key separate from the bike ignition??

Locks
You buy 2 new barells from a dealer or motorworks, put the original key in and then file off the bits that poke out the sides of the barell then insert them into the lock housing (tech term re jigging new barells).

I have just done mine.
You need a lock kit from BMW you might need two (got mine from motorworks) In fact I only used two bits out of the kit so I will sell you whats left for half price.
This is what you do:
Put key in lock and turn to open position, open handles.
Just under where the locking tab goes in there is a small hole push in a large paperclip sized wire or a small screwdriver. You may have to jiggle it around a bit.
This will release a springloaded tab at the bottom of the lock barrel and keeping the key inserted lift the lock barrel out.
Move to large clean work area where you can sit down just in case any bits fly out because you need them.
You will see that the lock tumblers are all level with the outer surface of the lock barrel.
Carefully remove the key and try not to let any of the tumblers spring out - they come out of both sides! The second one from the bottom should be empty.
Now insert your ignition key and you will see that some of the tumblers are no longer flush with the outside of the barrel.
These are the ones that must be changed
Carefully take one out at a time and look at the number stamped on it.
Go to the kit and find one with a different number.
Insert this and then put the key back in, if its flush with the barrel its the right one or try another one with a different number.
Do this until all the tumblers are flush with the barrel with the key in - you may be able to reuse some that you have taken out in a different position.
With the key in give the lock a good oiling - don't remove the key after you have done this.
Offer the lock barrel back into its hole in the pannier - you will need to press in the spring loaded bottom tumbler to get it back in - make sure this bottom one is facing towards the handle side of the hole otherwise you will never get the lock out again.
Jobs a good un.
Half and hour to do the first one without any instructions, five minutes for the other once I had figured it out.

I did a print of your comprehensive instructions yesterday and managed to quickly sort out my pannier locks. Luckily, I just needed to move some pins around so I won't need your kit. Thanks anyway.
This sort of mutual help really proves to me how useful this forum is.
All the best,
Mick
