Non-starter

Post by BlueBoxer »

Hi,

The R1100s would not start on Monday morning, it was very cold :!: Spluttered a bit on one cylinder, then stopped. I tried a few times, and then I left the bike in the garage.

After charging the battery and cleaning the air filter, I've now worked out that I have large sparks on the upper right spark plug, none on the left. I've swapped the plugs over, and still have large spark in the right, nothing on the left.

Before I take the tank of tonight, any tips or hint on what to look for or do next?

After swopping more stuff about, this appears to be the problem on the left side:-

Is it worth replacing the one on the right at the same time? I'd guess they are not cheap :!:
I guess there must be a coil in there, as it's only fed by some thin wires.

I think there is a tiny coil in there, and I think they're about £60 each - from what I've heard.

Just replace the one.

They have a life of their own. Know some to last 100Kmiles, others to last 6Kmiles. The nere one is likely to packin before the older one.

Age also doesn't seem to come into the equation. Bloody things.

I have noticed that they've changed the material in the newest type. Not sure if it's to help cure this well known problem, or just a change of colour in the internal resin.

I've been to work and back today, and it's running much better than it has for weeks. I'd guess there's been a problem with the coil for a while.

Motorworks didn't have them in stock. Southport Superbikes didn't have any. Becky at Southport Superbikes, found 2 in Williams in Machester, so I drove out and bought them, to make sure I could fix the problem before Christmas. £53 each

Once fitted it started first time.

Before the change, it would take a few turns to start. It wouldn't tick over evenly for a while, when it did the tickover was low. So if I get these symtoms again, I'll know where to start looking :!:

Bemer Bikes changed the left one on my bike - and cured an annoying misfire in about 2 minutes flat.

It's a different bike now!
2011 Harley-Davidson FLD Switchback - yeah, I know. I've always wanted one though...
