Now then, that was a good programme and a good book so if you want a decent read for Christmas try this and Touching the Void... author Joe Simpson ps he can write as well as he can climb. Enjoy.

I watched that programme, excellent, just shows us mere mortals what a human can achieve. Such a sad ending, can't imagine what must have gone through his mind. I think I will also get the book.

Tarnation! Missed it! Have to wait for the repeat. The first time I read Touching the Void I read it cover to cover in one go - this was wasy way before the film was made. Mind you, when that came out I persuaded a group of people to go watch that at the cinema one night instead of some arty-farty thing they wanted to. They all came just aghast at what they both went through and, with no experience or real interest in climbing or mountaineering, thought the film brought home the situation they were faced with. Provoked as much conversation in the pub as with any bunch of climbers I've ever been away with.

Steve Venables' A Slender Thread is another ripping read. Mega epic in the Himalayas & quite astonishing.

I too thought the programme was excellent. It's incredible to think that the fastest ascent of the North face is something like four hours and 40 minutes by some guy with 40 metres of rope, two caribineers and a litre of water

All of Joe's books are a excellent read, each charting a different aspect of his career in mountaineering. I can also recommend 'The White Spider', the storey on which this latest documentary was based. the writing is not as good as Joe's but a riveting read all the same.
If anybody would like a loan of any of any of titles, drop me a pm and I'll see what I can do. Ohh, except The Beckoning Silence as i've just started reading it again.
