24k Service & Starter Motor hizzing noise

Post by Lars1974 »

Hi all,

having just printed out the complete Repair manual i have decided to do most of the coming 24k service on my R1100s myself. if anyone has any tips or tricks please let me know.
i may still get the bike to dealer for the balancing of the engine as i dont have right equipment.

i have question about the starter motor:
When the bike is cold and i try and start it up the starter turns the engine over a few time and than just hizzes...its the same sound as pressing the starter button with the engine already running...once the engine is warm it does not happen...
the battery should be good as its on an optimate all the time...
Any ideas???

Thx Lars

Whatch this space for when i get stuck with the service

Hi Lars,
The starter motor operates in a dry often dusty environment which may lead to the shaft that the starter gear runs along getting a bit dry and fouled, thus it will just spin around and the gear will not engage the starter ring. If your starter cover is like most and doesn't fit very well, then road dust and grime has probably made its way in. Remove the cover and clean the starter shaft with 'Wobbly Dog' then give it a go.

You may have to take the starter off but I don't think its a big job.

Cheers, Cobbster.

Hi Lars,

The 24K service schedule says to replace:

Fuel filter,
Oil filter,
Clutch fluid,
Gear box and final drive oil,
Spark plugs,
Engine oil.

You said that you were taking it in somewhere for the valve clearances and throttle bodies so no tools needed there.
You will need an oil filter tool to get the old one out/new one in(£8 motorworks) Spark plug spanner should be in your tool kit. I relpaced the fancy bleed nipple on the clutch bleed line with a 10mm one from a motorfactors (£1), this made bleeding as simple as brake bleeding. The gearbox drain plug is a bugger to get out. I bought a 17/14mm sump plug socket and chopped it in half and used the 14mm end and a shifter to get it off. Fuel filter needs no special tools just a bit patience to get it out.

As for the parts, I found buying from my local stealers just as cheap as motorworks, ie, an oilfilter from motor works + PP is £12, BMW £9. It depends if theres a dealership near you.

Have fun, Cheers, Cobbster.

Hi Cobbster,
thanks for that.
i dropped into my local dealer (Vines of Guildford) today and ask them how much a 24k service would be....£480 + VAT - Ouch!
i than asked if i just get them to change the fuel filter...as they told me that could be a bit tricky (£90 to change) and engine balancing 1/2 hour labour so it would cost me about £150 all in to get them to to these 2 jobs.

my clutch was change when i bought the bike last year @13k miles...so i should not need to change that now...

leaving me with just the 3x oil changes and brake fluid and valve clearance checks...
the bike also had new plugs lst service at 18k...so i will just inspect them now.

that should be it.
thanks for your tips.
much appreciated.

£480 + Vat !!!!!! Bloody hell, for what amounts to a few fluid changes and clearance checks, thats just daylight robbery, at least Dick Turpin wore a mask when he was fleecing people. Its no wonder people do there own servicing on their Boxers. I for one have no worries about buying a home seviced Boxer if I thought the person selling it looks like he/she could handle a spanner. I do my own yearly servicing and take it to my local bike shop for the throttle body balance and tappet check. The big services I'm going to take it to a BMW trained guy called Mick Kendrick in Sunderland, he charges about £125 for a 6K service and £155 for a 12K one inclusive. This includes all the bits n peices.

If I were you I would have a go at changing the fuel filter and save a bob or two. Its great fun stinking of petrol and cursing your head off at your pride and joy, sort of helps the bonding process

Cheers, cobbster

Hi Lars,
Iv'e done mine once and it was pretty easy to do. Theres a picture by picture description on tappet setting on the Pelican forum which helps.
The last time I had them done I had my local bike shop do them because I had the throttle bodies balanced aswell. You have to do them after a tappet set so I just told them to do both jobs. Only set me back £30. If you ask around most bike repairers will balance throttle bodies, I found its not just a BMW thing most bikes need them doing at some point. I'm lucky I have a guy close by who's mechanic has an R1100s so he know's them pretty well.

Cheers, cobbster.

Lars

That's a crazy price for a service. Go and buy yourself a twinmax for about £50 and do the whole lot yourself as you're going to be far better off long term. Even if you did it bit by bit over a period of time you are going to be able to learn and replicate this over all your motorcycling years as long as you stay away from Jap crap over complex multi's

Hi Simon,

I hail from sunny Blyth on the coast, the fixer I mentioned who did my throttle bodies and tappets is a guy in my town called Newsham motorcycles. He's in the yellow pages but be warned he's always busy so a booking is essential. The chap in Sunderland is called Mick Kendrick, he's Mill BMW trained and he does mobile stuff too. His number is 01915142311. I havn't used him yet, I was going to for my 12K service, but Iv'e heard nothing but good reports and resonable prices too.

As for your rusty nuts, try www.inoxgrp.co.uk Their spot on for any stainless bits you might need.

Cheers, cobbster
