hello, I live in Herts and own a 1999 R1100s, '01 1150gs, 05 1150 gsa
and a 1981 R100RS.
I have owned the R1100s for a year and it has always made a strange noise around 30 mph - it like a wind noise or the tyre noise you get in a car on certain road surfaces.
The bike has a new gearbox, and I have changed the final drive.
the front brakes are free and the wheel bearings are good.
It has a standard induction pipe but a K&N filter.
It does have some mesh covers for the oil cooler but taping these up doesn't seem to affect it.
Also turning off the ignition doesnt stop the noise
It seems to come from the tank area but its hard to tell wtih helmet on at 30 mph.
Anyone come across this before ?
noise

was wondering about this - I have never heard of this on a bike before but it does seem to be a possibility
It has a Pilot on at the moment but I guess its about done.
I see M & P have a sale on so was thinking about some Dunlops - £119 pr
Does seem quieter with full tank but still makes noise with ignition turned off.
My worst fear is that its the new gearbox that had been fitted just prior to me buying bike - in a moment of madness I sold a good spare on E bay for £62.

Ditto that - front tyre choice seems to make a lot of difference on mine certainlyHarry Lime wrote:I'm surprised you haven't been swamped with replies.
it could be just 'natural' front tyre noise.
Lots previous threads on here about noisy front tyres making exactly the noise you describe. Have you changed the front tyre recently? Metzlers's ghastly Sportecs are particularly renowned for this.
