Norhern line appears to be the cheapest and take most care of your bike, providing a designated bike park area away from the cars, trucks, etc, good quality straps and cushions for your saddle!! (according to my brother who uss them a lot)

Going out on the Saturday 8th. Aiming to have a very gentle pootle over, via some of the sights in Northern France and do the 'Ring' on Monday as its open from 1.00pm rather than 5.00pm. Returning back Tuesday.

Staying about a B&B in Hungersdorf, about 20 km away to the NorthWest. The road to the Ring looks quite interesting.

What date at you at the ring? Would be good to meet up.

Hi Nu2

We're arriving at Nurberg on the Friday (7th). Going for a spin around the Eiffel region on Saturday and on the track in the evening for a few laps. We'll then be up bright and early on Sunday morning for a few more laps before haeding back for the return ferry in the afternoon for the evening crossing.

Back to work Monday

Andrew, Thought YOU where in charge of the weather!!

Stoney, I use some small rachet straps (Hein Gerike) Just can't be doing with bits of oily rope. Usually put my gloves on the seat and put a strap over to prevent damage, It does squash down but soon recovers.

Henk, Many thanks for the invite but I think we are heading straight down to southern Germany on Sat. Then Austria,Italy,Switzerland before heading home through France,Belgium and Holland.

Re the Tunnel,to me going on the ferry is all part of the going abroad thing,fine if you don't like boats!!,bit like a 5 coarse dinner or taking a pill!!

As for the ring,jeeze,for a first time abroad on a bike i can think of far better things to do,the rings very fashionable at the mo,as is saying northern France is crap,the battle fields of France are a dam sight more thought provoking than the ring i can tell you.

One more thing....if the between-decks ramps are wet it is often the case that the tracks where the car tyres run have much better grip than the bit in the middle. But you are going to have sunshine, right?

Well said that man!!! First time I 'Did' some of the Battlefields/Memorials and Cemeteries it certainly made me think.

I went the ring earlier this year (in a car). Great trip, the roads around the ring are fantastic as well which compensates for the boredom of the long motorway stint either side of the channel...

We went in the tunnel - personally I like ferries as they enrich the journey, but the tunnel is certainly quick and will get you there hours quicker which was why it was chosen despite the premium.

Hear what you say Chris. I think we'll plumb for the ferry as like you say, its all part of the holiday.

As for 'doin the ring' its just somewhere to aim for and it is very fashionable

Just thought I'd better do it before the Health & Safety police shut it down. As you also say, there are loads of battlefields /memorials in Northern France to visit which is why we're heading over a day or so early to take a few of these in on the way to see the old circuit at Rhiems.

PS: Steve (Boxered) - you did the ring recently. Did it live up to your expectations??

I only spent an afternoon there, 'cos to be honest, racing/trackdays dont really interest me. I tagged along with my mates who specifically wanted a couple of days at the ring. Having said that, I did enjoy the experience

it was pretty quiet when we got there, but later on there were some fast nutters in track cars that scared the crap out of some

Over years i've visited many grave yards in NF,but the memorial at Thiepval that we to went last year with all the names of troops who just disappeared is a sight to behold,but if you want you want to 'feel' whats gone on in the past go to Verdun.

Went to Thiepval quite a few years ago with a friend who wanted to trace her Grandfather. Rang the War Graves Commision and they told us straight away--Commemorated on panel xxxx at Thiepval, No known grave. A very emotional moment when we went. Found his brother in the book that is kept there also. Went again this year with Yogi on the way to Flash's. Still strirs the soul even though you know what to expect.
