Mallory Track Day

Post by paulR »

I had my first track day yesterday and had an excellent time. I was in the novice group so for the first couple of sessions an instructor led us around and we took it in turns to follow him. The remaining sessions they just did a couple of sighting laps and then you were left to your own devices. The sessions were 20 minutes each and I went out 7 times (could have got an 8th but we left a bit early as we had a 150 mile ride home).

The R1200S was faultless and surprisingly rapid above 7000rpm. My tyres were quite frazzled by the end :D I didn't opt for any personal tutoring although that was available throughout the day. I didn't really felt I learnt all that much at first, but on the way home when I got to some familiar roads I did feel more confident and found myself braking later and deeper. All in all, a top day :D

Yes, it was. There weren't that many BMW's there though :? Maybe 3 or 4 1200S's, a couple of boxercups and a few 1100S's. Sandbar was there with a 1200S fitted with a very neat exhaust system. I'm very tempted :)

You should have gone last friday, done a couple of sighting laps, come in and ridden around on a free bike, tyres and fuel, only catch you pay the first 500 if you throw it down the road, the last gent who did, had a bargain the parts cost double that never mind the labour!!!.

There were quite a lot in the other groups. Plenty of BCRs - one ( a 2004)in the fast group was absolutely taking no prisoners. There were plenty of GSs - some 1150s as well as a few 1200s. I thought Boxadog was there because I saw a very rare red one.

There were also a couple of Boxsters, K1200Ss, K1200GT, K1100S and for the star of the day there was a very nice K1 in red. And he was putting a bit down as well.

Guzzi V11s, a Griso, couple of Buells, a KTM Duke 2, Aprilia Pegaso, quite a few Tuonos and a couple of RSVRs.

Great atmosphere and not really too much room for all the usual off road R1s, GSXRs and Fireblades etc, although there were a few.

To top it off, BMW Bracknell were there with their loan fleet, so there were all kinds of things to have a session on. To me that is a very brave situation - but hey! I guess they know what they are doing.

Oh yes - hello sir - you would like to have 20 mins unsupervised around Mallory on a K1200R Sport? Certainly sir - can you come back around 2.20, and we will have it ready for you!

All round an absolutely great atmosphere and a superb day.

Sorry I forgot.

And Rob Barksfield on a KTM Adventure. I reckon track riding on those tyres, Rob, took a fair bit of bravery as well!!!
