Steering stop adjustment?

Post by stoney »

I've dropped my bike and it seems to have shifted the steering stop more to one side. Its now closer to the bike on the right and has moved the same amount further away on the other side as though there is a collar of some kind that controls the lock and its moved a few mm.

Does anyone know where and how to adjust the steering stops?

Cheers for your concern. Just my pride injured. Very, very minor damage to bike and none to me. I've done 1500 miles since!

I hope I'm not right but... it's more likely that you have moved/bent the front subframe (and therefore the bodywork) than adjusted the steering locks. the locks are cast tabs on the main spar at the front of the bike, and they're not adjustable. They CAN break off though, and that means you need a new spar if you want to put it right.

The whole of the front of the bike ahead of the yolk is mounted on a basket like lattice alloy frame, and it can easily be bent if pushed in the right place. I know a rider that stuffed his in a ditch and it pushed all the bodywork over to one side.

If it's not to bad then I'd just leave it be. Maybe you want to take a good look from the front and see if you can see a difference, or maybe take some measurements inwards from the pots or summit and check.

Hopefully I'm wrong though

Me too.

The body work was untouched, not even a scratch so I can't imagine was has been pushed for anything to have been bent - the bar-end weight is also unmarked so who knows. I guess I'll just mention it when I get it serviced.

Where are the spurs that you talk about?

The spurs - the tabs you mean? They're on the end of the big black spar that holds the top yolk in the middle. I can't remember exactly where but moving the bars till they bump againt them you should be able to see them

Cheers for that Jason. I took the fairing of and finally managed to locate the steering stop and sure enough there was a nice little chip out of the stop for the right-hand lock, which meant it was going slightly futher than it should - I'm just glad it didn't go far enought to smash the fairing - they cost £390!

Anyway I have ordered the Wunderlich sterring stop as a precaution against it happening again or getting worse.

That's good news at least, and a simple fix too... excelent :D I presume you've ordered one of those 'hard parts' that stop against the front wishbone? That should do the trick

Yes, the wunderlich one looks a lot neater than the the Touratech one I have on my GS. I only wish I had fitted one from new like I did on the GS.

I checked and the TT actually overrides the OE steering stop as it touches it first, so it seems like the perfect solution and should prevent and nasty 'caught fingers' moments.

Word has it that R&G are just a couple of weeks away from releasing a crash protector for the rocker covers. Hopefully a similar look to the BMW ones but a heck of lot stronger!
