Cool!! Zed Cred!!! :)

You running a Block C on the back of the Zed? My Mag Hopeless is up for replacement soon and wondered what to get - not a lot of stuff available in a 110/80 (or 90) 16". :(

I've had the mz since '98 . I've run it on block c's (350/16) and me22 (f) since then but they got too expensive . Last time I ordered tyres for the s from bfm I got them to send a Heidenau 350/ 16. It looks identical to the block c although it lasts a lot longer.

Postby dave2wheels » Wed May 23, 2007 9:23 am

mines exactly the same - some model, same colour, same dirt.
Mine needs paint (on engine) and a polish (on pipe)

Be careful what you wish for...
My insurance policy was up for renewal in October , after removing a couple of bikes I'd sold I added the em zed to encourage myself to finish this "project" .
I was sure the last video I posted was early this year but on checking , no it was 2011  .

Wheels were in a bad state , and went through the stages below with the help of paint stripper , brass wire brush , etch primer and battleship grey (aerosol can variety)

Refitted the Spanny, new brake hydraulics , new carb, repaired some wiring , ( still needs an ignition switch...) made up a new choke cable , had a quick look inside the oil tank and ended up ripping it all out to remove the emulsified oil , added petrol , ignition off , full choke , two kicks , ignition on , choke off , one kick ,and it was ring ding ding!
I'd forgotten how difficult small capacity two strokes are to ride ( or maybe that expansion chamber has concentrated the power band in a 500 rpm sweet spot  )
Spent the next afternoon doing plug chops on the local by pass , and fiddling with jets and needle position.
Currently feels reasonable but I can'thelp thinking did it always need that much throttle to get off the line in the traffic light GP  .
Fast forward a week , and i've survived the short commute , and even a few short motorway blasts which have revealed It hasn't lost any of it's "speed" it had before it's 4 year lay up.
I reckon it needs a throttle slide with a smaller cut away but for the interim i've ordered a cheap full length exhaust to see how that goes, and will it broaden the "powerband"
As mentioned elsewhere the sidecar went to a new home , although i'm not sure i'd have gone anywhere in a hurry with the current exhaust set up and a sidecar.

Hi Nigel looks good
Not sure if you are using oil tank or petroil mix if the latter it will need to be richened a touch the oil mix is thicker than petrol when my mate was proddy racing a GT500 i was his spanner man [bodger man] i did away with the oil pump and ran it on premix it used to hole pistons before i rejetted it [well thats what i told him] truth to be told i used to carry a mig welding nozzle reamer and used that going up in stages starting from the one that just fitted the main jet till it ran right at full revs, with skimmed flywheels, barrel bases, lots of porting, silver plated bearing cages and ignition timing running full advance, that old thing used to rev out at about 9000
when skint and a race meeting was booked we would ride the bike to the meeting race it then ride it home very often kicking it straight after he dumped it best result with it was 8th in a open 500 race
It was a bitch to ride in traffic but it could be done when he sold it he got a RD400E did no good on it whatsoever [couldn't keep it on the track]

Let's get back on topic an outfit is great fun in the snow you will be suprised where you can go with it

Interesting bike the GT 500 was , I always had a soft spot for them but never managed to get a spin on one , haven't seen one in years.
I have retained the oil pump and the more I ride the bike the better it feels , it just requires a lot more input then a larger capacity 4t. Hopefully when I get the original length exhaust it'll be a bit better.
The outfit would have been a laugh but I ended up passing on the sidecar to someone else , will probably end up getting a small 1 L car if the weather forecast is to be believed  .

Now with full length exhaust , resealed inlet manifold , air temperatures a lot higher and a bit more torque...

This is for the closet Em Zedders out there , I put this back on the road in August 2016 after a sabbatical to replace rear brake shoes ( i'd ordered the wrong ones , and to do some running repairs on the wiring loom . I need more time to psych myself up before I can attempt to make a new loom...)
It ended up off the road for a year and first impressions were " This is orrible ". Sorting the wheel alignment and twiddling with the carb helped .
I had another look at this website http://strv.pagesperso-orange.fr/strvmo ... /UKETZ.htm
and said right , even if I don't fit a programmable ignition system I'll at least advance the OE electronic ignition to the maximum recommended 3mm btdc ( It was set at the std 2.5mm). After 18 yrs and 50 k miles of ownership I finally have something resembling the mid range of my much loved Supa 5 of the early 80's  .
I did try to contact the guy on the website as to which ignition unit he used but unfortunately no reply. The programmable unit is set with much more advance than std up to 3.5k rpm and then retards the ignition more than std up to 6k rpm. ( you can see the figures on the website link).
Anyone got an MZ they don't want ? I feel another project in the pipe line...

Is that a Turbo saddle I spy? Could not get away with one of those although I did have one on a Nigel Dean I built up when I got back into cycling in my late 20s. Graeme Obree used to use one - thats maybe why he got the hour record - he couldn't wait to get off

Yup ... It's more uncomfortable than I remember but (1) I was in my 30's when I used that saddle originally and now I'm nearly in my 60's and (2) I was hoping that was because I haven't got around to getting some proper shorts yet... I could do 7 and 8hr days on that back in the 90's!
Any suggestions for saddles ?
