Actually, I feel sorry for Police and Ambulance drivers trying to respond to an emergency...

As we bikers should be aware, half the car drivers are on a different planet, and that's not even when they're on the mobile, txt'ing, reading a paper...

Ditto pedestrians, joggers, cyclists, etc...who, when they're not listening to, or gazing at a mobile, invariably have an MP3 playing clamped round their head...also a poular option for many car drivers...

And for those that aren't involved in the above...just have a think about how many people have difficult managing their shopping trolley in a supermarket...or even just walking down a high street...seemingly oblivious...

Deaf, blind and dumb (it's a pun!).

The officer who was driving in the Sheena Macdonald accident was prosecuted for driving without due care. He was acquitted after the court heard that he was travelling at no more than 20mph with blue lights and sirens on as he overtook a queue of stationary traffic. Miss Macdonald was seen to step suddenly into his path and he claimed there was nothing he could do. She has since tried unsuccessfully to sue the Metropolitan Police.

You obviously sat up late coming up with that one Neil but you’re going to have to try harder. This all happened in 1999 so it’s not exactly hot off the press!

Since then police driver training and the priorisation of emergency calls have all been revised. I found several stories about officers being prosecuted and a couple of my old colleagues ended up gripping the rail over things that happened when they were behind the wheel of a patrol car on the way to some emergency. If the evidence is there you are in the same jeopardy as anyone else – perhaps more so.

“Speedin” is of course just a turn of phrase. Let he who is without sin cast the first stone I say – there wouldn’t be many rock throwers on here I tell you!!

Ah that'll be me then.

The trouble for me has been that traffic and other policemen that I know have blatantly run a set of double standards.

Like:

"Over 70mph is against the law" followed by "I got 152 out of a loaner Subaru last week".

It doesn't engender a sense of fair play does it?
