How many miles in a clutch ?

Post by cc mac »

How many miles can I expect from a clutch ? The mechanic doing mine thinks I've done well getting 43K. There was no oil contamination on the plates. I need to know if I have to budget for a horrendous bill every 30 or 40k. Is this the Achilles heel of the boxer engine ?

How long's a piece of string? 100k miles on a motorway will cause a clutch very little grief, but 100k miles in town will probably see you get through two. How hard do you ride your bike, where do you ride it, and when's the next full moon?

It's impossible to say but I'd have thought at least 60k miles on a clutch is a reasonable expectation under 'average' use.

I changed mine around 95k but it was still fine - need not have bothered!

I changed mine around 95k but it was still fine - need not have bothered! The parts are about 100 quid - it's a reasonable straight forward, if long job to do yourself in a weekend. If you want Mr BMW to do it it might cost near a grand

Mine was showing signs of being b*ggered at 125K miles>mixture of town and motorway riding.

Just so's you don't feel bad with 43K - mine was in bits after 36K. DIY is cumbersome, but straightforward - imagine doing a rwd car!

Mine was changed under warranty at under 10k when they did the output shaft seals (don't know why but it cost me nothing at the time)

Threw that one away recently with very little wear (except for the shagged splines) at 34k - a sizable chunk of which is city riding...

I get the feeling that despite the supposed longevity of the boxer engine, they spit their dummy at some point and require major works to the drive train... be it clutch, input shaft splines, shaft probs or bearing probs (or all of the above)...

The engine would appear to be bullet proof as people on here seem to only suffer probs when they have undertaken mods..

Intend on replacing the paralever bearings at some point this autumn/winter as a precaution before next years major trips are planned... (if I ever get round to the repairs or trips )

Thanks for your feedback, I might keep the bike then and stop looking at Super Blackbirds.
