Sensible upgrades to Boxer Cup?

Post by Robinyuill »

Hi there. I am new to the forums but I have a 2004 BCR and now its out of its 2 yr warranty I am looking to do some up grades that are
1. Affordable 2. Sensible 3. Worthwhile
The obvious ones are to replace the exhaust and ditch the cat but what replacement should I choose. Is it nessesary to "chip" it or can you leave it alone? The suspension. I take it that Ohlins are the best option. I am a reasonable spanner monkey but any guidelines would be appreciated.
Thanks for any help. Robin.

Hi Robin,
IMHO New Shocks (Which ones depend upon your budget!!) Ditch the cat, Lennies Induct and finally a San Jose superfilter. I reckon thats about as good as it gets. (Unless you want Dymags Carbon Panels and so on)

Regards Peter.

Hi robin
Laser do a system inc end cans and y piece cat eliminator.
A "lennies"induct is also a worthwhile mod.
Suspension?Buy the best you can afford. Its worth it!Lots of happy ohlins users here and some other brands.
A HID light system is also a worthwhile mod if you do any night time riding.
Thats a start anyway, loads more can be done. But its a case of "how deep are your pockets"
All the best

If i was starting out all over again(heaven forbid),i'd go Lennies Induct,SJ filter,Y piece with a decent set of cans,a Power Commander and a Verholen ajustable arm because in stock trim the S steers like brick shit, and if you think other wise you rideing the bugger hard enough!!!

Chris
He has a BCR,so it should steer well enough with the shortened arm already on.

If you want it to go faster you got the wrong bike! You can probably make it more comfy, better handling, a better tourer even - but it'll cost a fortune to go faster with little return for the investment.

I notice nobody has mentioned cost yet, so how about £1000 for shocks, £200 for an SJ filter, £150 for the Lennies, anything from £75 for a second hand y-piece to £700 for y-piece and cans. If you do upgrade the intake you'll need to look at fuelling, so allow £200 for a chip and £300 for a PCIII then, say, another £200 for dyno set up time.

So if you want to go faster, it may be better to spend the money on another bike in terms of trading in, or to spend the money on training, track days, petrol, a good holiday or two.....

True.
An adjustable arm or adjustable rear shock(ride height)will sharpen the steering up.
Its a case of how far you want to go and how much money. But if your into boxers and like tinkering then money dont come into it.

Great. Keep them coming.

Thanks for all the info. As you say, its all about just how deep your pockets are. I got a Illmberger c/f air intake from flea bay for £50. Is this the same theory as a "Lennies" air duct? Thanks. Robin.

fleabay and trawling through here has saved me a fortune. Upgraded the shocks for £550 fitted using E=MC. I doubt I could tell the difference in handling between these and the much more pricey

I'd liken the S to a jigsaw puzzle, there's are lots of pieces and without most e'm makes very little sense,i'd totally disagree with Me109 thats complete bolloxs.

No matter what bike you buy it can be modded,i've a mate with a Fazer thou going the same route as i have with the S,apart from a straight line he hasn't got a prayer on it.

Choose your bits wisely and most importantly were you get them from, wait till second hand shocks either come up on here or e-bay,they sure as hell ain't anywhere near a grand and personally i'd not even bother with the front unless you've deep pockets,Lennies induct £100,Verholen the same,Y piece 100 quid.

Even things like HID lights, trawl through old postings and who paid what,i paid 80 quid for mine!!!new in a box.

Mine has had way to much money spent on it,and i don't regret a penny it runs better than ever, haveing a guy squeeze pass me on the way to Cadwell a few weeks ago i'm two up and he's on a twin pipe ZX10 and i was well miffed, gives some idea of how well it runs and how hard i can ride it,there ain't to many people want to run more than 130 in a country lane.
