At last,.. 8 months after the event, the Bike Mechanics have stripped the 1100S and discovered that the left side is fine. Unfortunately, although Crank, Head, Valves etc are good on the right side, I need a Right Side Barrel and Piston. Alternatively.. change both side heads, pistons and barrels.
So, .. calling 'Jason', .. can we start talking 'Cash' and 'Logistics'. (However,.. I seem to be a lot better at the 'Logistics' than the 'Cash' :-) , ... but that's just a courier thing.

I've just had a look at the damage. The right piston is holed just below the lower piston ring, at the bottom of the piston, IE, facing the road on the bike.
No apparent reason for it happening, .. those of you that suggested a 'holed piston' a few months ago, ... what reason do you suggest for it and is there any cure to prevent it happening again?

Cheers, Geoff

A piston with a hole burned in it typically means knocking/pinging due to lean mixture. I'd suggest 2 things: run premium fuel, instead of regular (less chance of pinging) and a chip/PC or something similar to get a richer mixture.

And , dare I say, a lean running aircooled motor used as a courier weapon doing stop/ start / stuck in traffic ain't gonna do it any favours.
Do I remember you had a race can??
Also, was there much carbon build up....signs of excessive oil in combustion chamber. It may be worth doing the valve guides/ stem seals if this is the case.

Geoff

Is it a melted hole or has it fractured? It seems a little odd that it's below the rings. The nature of the failure should give a clue to the cause.

Cheers

Bailey mentioned a 'Courier Weapon?', .... hardly a 'Weapon' the way I ride Bailey :-)
It has a race can on, Vanderline, but with a top quality 'Termigoni Sticker' on it. I guess regular servicing might have been of long-term benefit.
If 'Education' is learning from other people's mistakes,.. then I'll put this one down to 'Experience', ... learning from your own mistakes.
