R1100S surging
My '02 1100s is a great bike apart from the engine. The main problem is the surging at small throttle openings even in 4th and 5th gear! I understand a Teclusion device can cure this, but I don't want to remove the cat/silencers. Alternatively is it possible to re-map the ECU to more reasonable settings? Otherwise, does the use of jumper leads in the cat code box work on this model?
You'll be unlikely to cure the problem completely if you keep the cat, although it's possible you could improve it somewhat by fitting a PC or Teclusion (preferably a PC - the Teclusion is crude by comparison). There's no need to change cans, but is there any particular reason you don't want to fit a Y-piece in place of the cat? If you rode a bike without a cat you might be persuaded
The ECU can't be re-mapped but you can change chip. However this alone won't cure the surging as you'll have to run a conservative fuel map - you have to run lean with a cat fitted. Junking the cat is the first step to take towards improvement.

Thanks for your reply, can you tell me what a pc is, do you mean a lap top, or is this a similar device to the Teclusion?! If so, do you have any idea where to buy one and for how much?
Do you know if the use of a jumper/shunt across terminals in the cat code box is an option, and if so, how much difference this would make?
The reason for not wanting to lose the cat is mainly financial, I don't have the money or the will to replace bits of the exhaust in order to make the bike run how it should in the first place. How come this problem isn't on the Japanese bikes, they manage to pass the emissions tests??!

A PC is a Power Commander - see http://www.dynojet.co.uk/ for prices and dealers. With a Power Commander or Teclusion unit you'd have to get it set up on a dyno to see any real benefit so if your budget won't stretch to £150 for a Y-piece then either of these electronic solutions will be out of the question.
You can sometimes effect an improvement by using a cat code plug as a jumper, however how much difference it'll make varies from bike to bike - in my experience they're fitted only to make allowances for manufacturing tolerances.
If you think that your S compares unfavourably with Japanese bikes then maybe you're bought the wrong bike
You have three choices:
a) ride it bog standard and put up with the 'characteristics' that you're asking for help in reducing;
b) start modifying it to make it a better bike like most of the people on this forum have done (or are doing - it's an ongoing process for most);
c) sell it and buy a Japanese bike that won't suffer from any surging but won't have the character of an S or be such a pleasurable ownership experience. It'll be near perfect.....but also perfectly bland.

Jap bikes have the same problems. My previous bike, the FJR was notorious for surging issues and drives people up the walls. It's worse from one bike to another, not just between models, but also between bikes of the same model.kwilliamson wrote:Thanks for your reply, can you tell me what a pc is, do you mean a lap top, or is this a similar device to the Teclusion?! You could try pulling the cat code plug entirely and disconnect the O2 sensor. What I understand is pulling the ccp will richen the mixture and disconnecting the O2 will prevent the moronic to go into closed loop. This can kill your cat though, but it will likely help the surging.

Will that help on my TLS too? Seriously, cos it looks like a bugger of a job on the Suzuki - tank, steering damper, fairing, and airbox off. One neat thing is that the TPS is zero'd using one of the LCD screens on the dash.winger wrote:Want to stop the surging??? by a twinmax and balance the injectors properly.

Have also bought a PCII of ebay for it.

When i bought my S,surging was just one of the many issues i had with it!!!,what i found with TW it takes time to get thing bang on,more to do with how to use it as much as anything else,had a purge with it for the best part of twelve months with a combination of useing good fuel and fresh plugs,it's been years since i had even the slightest hint of surging.
