Ipod

Post by Boxadog 2000 »

Any comments on the Apple Ipod,

I am thinking of buying an Ipod Nano 4GB.

Have heard as many good reports as bad ones.

This will be to go with an Autocom system

they look nice and are very small.

I am waiting for a cheque to turn up so I can buy the bigger one. I figure you may as well pay the extra cash and get more space. Would probably use it as a backup hard drive for photos..

Just need to repair the power socket again after the plugged in cable melted and shorted on the exhaust....

Bob,

I have a 40Gb photo and still have only used 1/4 of it's capacity and I have nearly 3000 songs downloaded on it.

I recently bought my wife the 4Gb Nano, it is very small and still holds 1000 plus songs.

The itunes software that comes with the ipod is very good for downloading/uploading and managing your music.

The only downsides to the ipod is battery life, but the Nano is a lot better, and it can sometimes freeze, but all you have to do is let the battery run down and it is back to normal.

I would reccommend you buy The Rough Guide to Ipods by 'Peter Buckley & Duncan Clark' it is priced at £4.99 form WHSmiths nad is excellent for knowledge.

Hey Bob, I bought a 20gb photo last year, just before the ipod video was announced. :(
I chose this one as I could put just about all my c/ds onto it (and I have loads) with some space left over.
For holidays, days out, etc. the idea is to down load my camera to the ipod and wipe the card free. This saves me buying extra cards for the camera and maybe losing one.
As Andrew says, the software is fantastic.
Although the ipod isn't particularly large, I find it just a bit too bulky (I have a cover on it as well) and heavy to fit in my shirt pocket, so I'm planning on buying a nano for when I'm travelling 'lite' with no bags.
You could though, save quite a bit of money by avoiding the ipod brand and going for a mp3 player from another manufacturer which does basically the same.
The supplied earphones are the 'in the ear' type. Painful for me, so I got a pair that curl around the ear and rest lightly in place - bliss!
Have a search for ipod forums. Lots of complaints but they have shifted squillions of them.
No idea how they work with Autocom, sorry.

Well I have looked at a zillion sites and most of the gripes seem to be about the Nano, poor battery life screens thats cratch etc etc.

Have looked for the 20gb Ipod and cant find one at a retailer in stock I dont want to buy one over the net I want to buy one from a shop so that if it does go wrong I can go back and bang my fist on the counter like a propper Englishman.

have found the Ipod video 30GB at John Lewis for £200.

A bit more than I wanted to pay but hey ho I guess I will go get one.

John Lewis are always pretty good on Customer aftercare.

Bob.

Ahh and all this so that I can get Jude to go on the bike for more than a hundred miles.

Still France and Spain could well be on the cards for next year :D

Bob, I'd be interested to hear how you get on with the autocom and music.

On the S, I have to have the music turned right up to hear it over the earplugs and wind noise at motorway speeds....

which translates to me not hearing much as I then have to turn it down as its too loud for Cara.

Went across Spain listening to snare drums and hi hats and little else....

voice transfers fine though although it cuts off the first bit of a sentence sometimes if you don't make enough noise to trip the filter.

I invested in some shure sound isolating headphones. They are a bit pricey but the sound quality is superb. They are a snug fitting headphone, you have a choice of buds to use, that cuts out the external noise by working as an earplug. I use them with my garmin and have to have the volume on the lowest setting.

this is a mail order company that have really excellent service. I had a problem with an early pair and sent the mback and had a replacement by the end of the week.

Whilst the E2 is good the E3 is even better and smaller

The autocom has speakers you put in the helmet but I wonder if it can be hacked with a set of earphones as that might sort out some of the wind noise issues.

To connect earphones into the garmin required an adapter from maplins. Autocom do make so many computations of kit that I would imagine there is a work around.

I should add with the Shure earphones you can barely here the bike and wind noise is all but gone.

Ade, by the way did you get the pm I sent you about the c/f hugger as the offer stil stands,

Before i went on summer hols i said you could have the hugger that fits onto the OE shock. It needs a coupple of screws, has a couple of scratches but is otherwise sound and when rubbed with a bit of WD-40 it looks rather good. It is still yours if you want it, gratis. All you have to do is collect it from Knights bridge. Let me know if you still want it now your S is back together and we can sort out a time,

Bob,

New iPod Nano was announced yesterday, which addresses previous gripes of poor battery and scratchy screen.

Image

It would be the way to go. I tried using a hard disk iPod on my R1100S in the tank bag and the hard disk crashed due to the characterful vibration of the bike. Solid state is the way to go.

Cheers,

Paul[/url]
You really need only two tools: WD-40 and duct tape. If it doesn't move and it should, use WD-40. If it moves and shouldn't, use the tape.

Bob - I hate you. :(

I was determined not to get into the realm of buying any MP3 gadgety things (I'm a vinyl freak when it comes to music replay) but you've made me go and buy a Nano for myself.

It's only taken me since 2pm today to suss out how to use iTunes though. The supplied instructions are sh*te.

Anyway...

It is one very cool little gadget. 8)
