Final drive.

Hi all.
One quick question. Has anyone had to have the universal joint replaced? Well I think that it is. Just in front of the gaiter on the shaft drive. You can feel it if you put your hand on it while pressing down on the bike while it on the side stand. + Grinding noise and vibration while on the move. . If so how much would a job like that cost to repair?

Went on me in France but got me home. (slow) 50mph.

Since the shaft wouldn't be turning whilst the bike is on the side stand I would not suspect the UJ but think it may just be the paralever bearings, which shouldn't be too bad a job. May account for the grinding noise too, but I'm not sure about the vibration.

I'm sure those with experience of actual failures will come along and advise before too long.

Dave - sounds like it could be the paralever bearings. They're about £20 the pair from Motorworks and it would only take an hour to do the whole job... well it would in my garage anyway cos I've done it a few times... I think Paul had his done by S :sad3:C recently and they probably charged hansomely.

My rear UJ went around 75k I think. The rear tell tell sign was the amount of shunt in the driveline between throttle on/off. That and the fact that I was getting a horrid metal 'click' noise when pullung away. I got a 2nd hand one from motorworks for about £70 I think. Again - probably less than an hour to change. Just make sure your man gives the U/J a good 'twatting' to secure the spring clip over the grove in the bevel box input splines :shock:

The only real ball ache in the job is getting the two halfs of the shaft lined up on reassembly

If anyone needs a UJ I still have the one I bought from Motorworks sat in my garage. Never got round to fitting it before I lost patience and traded the S in.

Obviously I'll let it go for less than the £70 Motorworks charged.

Thanks Guys for the replays.
Have ordered and received two paralever roller bearings from motorworks. The bike is going in for repair on Friday (30/06/06) will update on cost of repairs.

Hi Mac.
It went on me half way through the second week. Found a bmw dealer if France. And I think he said it would get me home if I took my time.
I must admit I was concerned. But I could not understand why the bearings should wear out after only 14000 miles. Maybe they where over tightened in the first place. But I honestly don’t know.
But thanks for asking. And it didn’t spoil my holiday. Had a great time.

You all had it one. They where the paralever bearings and in a bad state they where too.

Got the bike fixed today. Cost. Labour only £141.00.
Bearings…motorworks) £ 33.00
Total cost £174.00.

Just glad to get the bike up and running again.

How many hours labour did they quote for that then? That job takes under an hour for fecks sake. I don't think I'd be back there in a hurry.

Glad it's all safe and back on the road though. Those bearings often look worse than they were when removed cos they tend to fall to pieces when you extract them if they're worn - I was finding little needle bearings in the grease for ages after last time I did them :oops:

Hi Jason.
The actual Job took about 1.45 hrs. When I queried this they said that they took another man from another job to give the fitter a hand on the bike.

So the total hrs they said was 2.30hrs+ the cost of the grease etc.


A bit steep to say the least. :evil:

Colwyn Bay motorcycles are my nearest dealers. So I did have no choice in the matter.

Wish I could have done the job myself but did not have the tools etc.

It's certainly a pain when you have no choice and they have you by the balls :shock: Still, they should give you at least another 20-30k or more (in my experience) before they go again hopefully
