Guys,your brain power and excellent taste/knowledge of pubs in the Thames corridor from Heathrow up to Reading area are required.
I am thinking a real pucker country pub that does pretty good food(I'm not talking Beefeater or anything nasty like that!).
I do have a Michelin Pub guide but I've packed it away in one of several thousand boxes for when I move
If you could come up with some ideas including what type of beer and sort of food they do I'd be very happy.
Oh,and this is for going out tomorrow for lunch....Sunday 7th Jan!!

It does prompt me to ask if anyone can recommend a truly good eating place. I have been trying food journalists 'best sites' around Holborn for a few years. About every six weeks, I try venues, money is not really an issue, to find the best. Generally, Italian restaurants have come out tops. Next week I am trying the Pearl. (French).
Of course, places change quickly, chefs/managers move on and the quality goes with them.
So where did you have the BEST meal in the last two months? I will consider it for my list if it's in central London.
Best ever truck-stop was near Wakefield in 1980, the owner ws an ex-trucker, knew what drivers wanted. Bottomless mug of good, Yorkshire tea; the very best, enormous rashers of back; free range, large eggs; HP beans by the ladel; real meat pork sausages and as much buttered slice as you could manage. The place was always busy, he moved to a golf course in Spain. Very wealthy.
Only the best will do.
If money isn't much of an issue and you like japanese....then get yourself booked into Umu in Bruton Place W1.I've been there twice and the food,service,and decor is exquisit.
If you intend on drinking...think of around £100.00 per head.

Bailey mate - I'm not really a pub goer meself but a lot of people from our place go to the Leather Bottle on the main road (can't remember the name) if you come off the M3 at Jn 5 (hook) - go round the Hook bypass and take the road to Reading (can't remember the number) - it's about 3 miles out of Hook on the right hand side. One of those pubs where you can't stand up in the bar because of the low ceiling (well I can't anyway, but you be fine mate ) The food is nice and big portions too. The road has some lovely bends on the way over to join up with the A33 then M4 at Reading on the way back.
Like I say, I'm not an expert, and I don't drink, but it seems a pretty nice place

Just back from the George& Dragon...food was excellent as was service and decor.Highly recommended and not too expensive:3 people 3 courses including 2 drinks each and coffee was £90.00.

missed the first post as I was working but I must recommend the Hinds Head Hotel pub in Bray. Its part owned by Heston Blumental of The Fat Duck and it does traditional British food that is truly superb.
As for London then I must shamelessly recommend my own restaurant to "oyster" who is looking for a good French restaurant in London.

ITV French Restaurant of the year 2005 amongst other awards and you can't get much better. It won't cost an arm and a leg either
1) The Dove (next to Hammersmith Bridge, on the River Thames, London England)
2) Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese, Fleet Street. Try the steak and kidney with a flagon of ale. Ahrrr, Mrs Smiggins!
