I have just purchased an R1100s & want to do an oil change.
Could any of you technically minded gents tell me how I get the filter out.
I'm probably being a bit Timnicebutdim - so bear with me.

Tim, try an oil filter removal tool 
£7.00 from MotoBins (scroll down to the bottom of the page) or any of the numerous BM parts outlets including the dealers.

Forgive me father for I have sinned... ex S owner moved onto pastures new with four cylinders and a chain... and back to a twin, albeit in a V.
you will need a filter removal tool, available from most dealers or from www.motorworks.co.uk , around £7 if memory serves correctly
