Oil Sight Glass

Postby Grip Fast » Sun Apr 02, 2023 12:32 pm

Does this sight glass look full of oil? My R12S was serviced last May, and I’ve checked the oil level several times since then, and it has looked correct. But when I checked a few days ago, I couldn’t see the oil level and assumed that the sight glass had gone opaque, so ordered a new one.

However, I wondered this morning if it might be oil trapped somehow, so that the glass looks full, so I took it for a short run to warm it up and get the oil flowing round. The result is still the same - no oil level visible in the glass.

My big worry is that the reason I can’t see an oil level, is because there isn’t enough to reach the glass, but I don’t want to top it up in case there is too much. I couldn’t see the holes at the back of sight glass until I took the photo attached. In the phot, they are quite clearly visible.

I think I might need to change the oil.

Get some help and lean the bike over both ways whilst looking at the sight glass. Try first to the left because it's unlikely that bike suddenly shows over-full oil, it's most likely low.

Yep, lean it over far enough and it will show one way or the other. The other option is to drain the oil and then refill with new as May is a fair time ago and it wont hurt to renew the oil anyway

Thanks for the replies. I’ve ordered the oil change kit, and will see what happens when I drain the old oil out. Cheers.

The oil change kit from motorworks is just a filter, a crush washer and a pair of gloves. Link below.
