Chattering Y piece
A new rattle was traced to the support bar on the Y piece cat replacement. The rubber bushes, without the box of the cat to hold them in place, had ridden out of the frame sockets towards the pipe. On one side it had allowed the support bar to rattle on the frame. I tied them back into the sockets with security wire. All is well again.

Oyster. 1999 R1100S. Almost original.
That's a scary coincidence!!!
I've just been in the garage doing exactly the same job for exactly the same reason. Only difference; I've used cable ties instead of lock wire ('cos I don't have any lock wire).
I think it would be a worthwhile mod to have a stainless steel washer tack welded each side to prevent this happening. I wonder why the manufacturer doesn't do it?. It would cost b*gger-all to do!

JB,
If you look underneath the Y piece, you should see two threaded rods, pointing to the ground. You appear to be missing a horizontal bar that fits between them and mounts to the two lugs on the frame, which is normally held in place by a plate bolted over the two threaded rods. Don't panic, several folks run the lazer without the support bar, with no problems noted to date.

You really need only two tools: WD-40 and duct tape. If it doesn't move and it should, use WD-40. If it moves and shouldn't, use the tape.

Ah!!! Laser pipes again.
Laser Y-pieces went through a number of incarnations - depending on which thought pattern existed at the time in the Laser factory.
Initially they thought that there was no need to have any support there because the weight of the Y-piece was so much less than the cat, so the system was provided without any support.
Then, when they started to suffer from silencers falling off, they decided that the reason for that was that maybe the system was not so light and did, after all, need support underneath. So they started to provide the systems with a support bar underneath. However the silencers still kept falling off.
The real reason for the cans falling off was that their manufacturing tolerances were so far out that the up-pipe joint to the silencers was not secure, but they did not realise that.
Therefore their third incarnation of the system, was to delete (again) the support under the Y-piece and add a locating tab (for the want of a better word) on to the silencers which securely fastened the silencers to an existing point under the seat.
Mind you - having a rigid fastening would also seem to negate the reason for having the silencers rubber mounted - but what do I know??
IMHO there is no need of the support, but it is imperative to make the joint between the up-pipe and the silencers secure. Either use a proper clamp (not the BMW one - because the thread on the bolt can 'bottom out') or fit a shim between the two pipes. As I have said before on this forum - a drinks can will do nicely.
By the way, all the Laser support bars that I have seen have had the washer tabs on. Some of them don't fit the bike, but they have all had the tabs.

Who'd have thought it could be so complicated.
For the record...
My silencers swing on the rubber mounts and appear to have no other means of attachment to the bike, they dont fall off even when I changed the shock I had to swing the Y-piece out of the way (by breaking the joint to the front pipes, and pushing the silencers about). I couldnt easily break the Y-piece to silencer joint, so left it in place.
Nothing has fallen off yet (except me).
What I miss most is the lack of anything for the centre stand to rest against. I had to build a rubber plate against the torque arm to stop it getting smashed up.
