OK so when I had my 1100s the front suspension unit (spring and damper) was found to have up and down movement at the top moiunting even though the mounting nut was done up tight. The rubber mounting had hardedned up. Cure: Inseret a rubber washer (home made from an old inner tube) bewteen the top of the unit and the mounting then do up the retaining nut again. Take care when removing the adjuster Knob as it contains a captive spring loaded ball bearing which gives you the positive stop clicking when adjusting the damping.

Cannot remember how I checked this whether the weight was off the front end and no wheel fitted maybe. Or just jack up the front under the sump and then get someone to let the front down slowly while you feel for movement at the mounting point.

If you cannot find play anywhere else it might be here.:)
There would appear to be a surfeit of prolixity and sesquipedalian content today please do not use a big word when a singularly un-loquacious and diminutive linguistic expression will satisfactorily accomplish the contemporary necessity

Thanks Jez , its a weird one .

Some times it feels like the front, some times the back .

I will in a few weeks make space in my workshop ( I hope  ) so I can get onto it .

The front will be the first I want to check , purely to satisfy myself , then I'll check the back .

Just a weird one , I've never experienced before .

Jez , I went out yesterday , did a hundred miles , no problems at all.

Saturday , went to work down the road on the bike , and it did the knocking sound and almost felt like the front end was solid , no suspension , twice ...

Needs further investigation .

My R1100S some times makes a knock sound that I can feel through the bars , when riding slowly over uneven surdace , small holes etc in the tarmac.

I've never noticed it at higher speeds .

I think its on the front, but not absolutley sure .

I've jacked the front up , checked wheel bearings etc , shaken and cant feel any play in the suspension on the front .

I can't find any thing loose at the rear either ..

Ideas please
Over prolonged use on poorly surfaced roads the bottom ball joint threaded section tends to wear through the actual metal wishbone.
Firstly try doing the nut up (needs an allen key and ring spanner from memory). Also check for wear in the actual ball joint, if tightening the nut on threaded section doesn't cure the problem.
