K1200GT Face Lift....

Post by Steve1200S »

So, last Tuesday some turd decided to run into the back of me at a junction in his Clio. :(

I'm ok, its was a low speed bump, but the hefty 1200GT was going over and no amount of strength was going to hold it up. It seems the exhaust took the hit, and the back wheel was not touched (luckily i think). Its riding fine, and just needs a mirror, a cracked side panel and some bent brackets as far as i know.

The insurance is sorted, and the bike was at the main dealers today to tot up the damage. I haven't received the quote yet though....

here's the issue though... I noticed a few weeks aga a nice 1200GT for sale at the same dealers, but it had K1300 fairing panels.... Odd. First thing i thought is, that's been dropped!

I was right, K1200 panels are no longer available, so my bike will have both side panels done and look like a 1300.

I'm not sure i like the idea or not.... Has my bike just lost loads of value? Surely any buyer would ask why it's got the wrong fairing on it?

Yep that's how it is now mate, I'm not sure how true it is but I was told that if you have one side replaced BMW pick up the tab and provide the other side FOC

This is the reply I got from Williams when I asked them about it back in 2012

"'Ive heard something about this

I think, im not 100% sure, that if that happens a warranty claim can be made on the opposite side for the part.
The only thing is you may need to get the panel painted if its not
available in your colour.

Hi Jan

Just wondered if you could confirm or deny something for me.

There's a lot of anger on the K forums at present about a parts policy
BMW appear to have regarding the left and right fairing panels on the
K12GT's like mine.

Apparently BMW have stopped stocking the part and now recommend the
K13GT part as replacement, whilst of course this would fit. The 13
part has extra styling on it so if say a left hand fairing was
replaced the machine would be non symmetrical as the right side would
be "plain" In order for the bike to look right the customer would have
to buy both sides and all of the additional extra styling bits.

Surely this is crazy?"

The alternative is to keep your eyes open on ebay for K12GT panels

Your bike will be on the insurance claim database (and BMW) anyway - so the information will be out there.

I don't think you have any way of avoiding this.

But - maybe you can claim additional for "loss of originality" - worth a try?

So, my insurance is up for renewal at the end of this month, I received a good renewal price at the start of the month, but then received another quote a few days after I was rear ended by someone.

My insurer (hastings) has put it up by £100 because someone ran into the back of me! How is that my fault! Scamming, blood sucking Di@ks!

After phoning them up and putting in a complaint, they decided to "see what they could do". They then knocked £60 off the higher price, still putting me £40 odd out.

What really got me is that "I should be pleased, as we've managed to save you £60 off your renewal quote, you can't ask for more than that sir."

Even though they are still really competitive, even with the extra £40, I'll be moving on just because they've pissed me off. The few other companies I’ve spoke to have already confirmed my premium will not be higher because of a no fault accident...

Yearly insurance rant over! :?

If you have a no fault claim you are statistically more likely to go on to have a fault claim, so some insurers will load you.

Reminds me of a quote (not sure who by and no pun intended):-
A politician (insert what you want here) uses statistics rather like a drunk uses a lamp post - more for support than illumination

Or

Statistics are like bikinis, what they reveal is interesting, what they conceal is vital :)

Did you know that 87% of statistics are made up on the spot

Did you know every time someone makes up a statistic they use 87%? :P

I think you'll find statistically, insurers will use 100% of possible excuses they have to rip you off 100% of the time. And 100% of the time, this will pi@s you off!

If anyone's is interested, dropping a K1200GT on its side and scraping a few bits costs £2307 to fix! Glad I'm not paying for it!
