But my 'snow socks' got me out and about.
I take it they work well Steve? Part of the reason I use the 650 is how epically useless my 330 is in the snow, I've seen vids on Youtube for snow socks and they seem good!

I bought a set a couple of years ago after seeing them in action on a Merc S350 in Switzerland. I was there with a mate in his Range Rover which pin balled between armcos backwards down a steep hill - £700 worth of cosmetics; admittedly he didn't have winter tyres on. His brother's Merc zipped up and down the same hill with nae bother wearing its socks. Well impressed. They're made of some sort of kevlar weave for durability - mind you, they'll be shagged in short order if you leave them fitted on tarmac. Piece o'cake to fit; just like an out-sized shower cap. Fit over the top of the wheel, roll the car forward then pull the other part over. Doesn't matter if they're not perfectly square as they quickly centre themselves in use. Much cheaper than decent snow chains too.
Downside: aren't recognised as a substitute in countries where it's compulsory to use chains when instructed by signs.
When in Germany last winter I carried a set of borrowed chains for a big 4x4 - I had a MINI. Figured I was complying with the law and, if required, I'd sling the socks on. No actual compulsion to use chains in Das Vaterland (unlike Austria), just have to have them in the car.
