what I find amusing is the line about turning the bike upside down and petrol can't escape ..... that'll be true I guess, it's when they're the right way up it pisses out of the float bowl

That brings back memories for me.
I was 18, in the Army, and riding my Honda 250 Superdream along the A303 back to London from my parents in Devon.
I pulled into a Little Chef, and standing their was a tall slim guy, in his mid 30's I guess, in ultra smart leathers, putting on his helmet before taking off on his R100RS.
I stood and stared.
Not is a gay way you understand

Well, know what it's like when you're young and you see the big boys on their bikes.
It became a kind of iconic image for me.
I wanted to be him one day.
Funny how those images stay with you, like snap shots.
He'd be nearly 70 now.

I was working for a dealership that sold superbikes to the super rich in Highgate until 1978; we sold custom painted R1000S at £2999. I could not justify the price at the time, the bike's finish was really quite poor. The Italian machines looked, similarly, quite good, until you put on inspector's glasses. The Kawasaki's had the best 'showroom' finish. I still think the Laverda Jota was the best at the time, a monster compared to the others in the showroom.

Not doubting you for a moment, but I tend to see far more BMW's from this era still looking smart today, than I do anything Japanese.

and look what happened to Laverda, who produced nothing worthwhile after the Jota.

Another picture i remember from around the same time was the Suzuki Cobra buried in the side of a car
Not sure if it was an advert but that was one hell of a lot of damage to the car
Yes i had a cobra but it wasn't mine in that pic
