LED lamp conversion.

Post by HerrFlick »

Just a few observations re my LED lamp experiences, for what they're worth:[/size]

In the mid-noughties I'd been hearing about the benefits of LED replacement lamps for filament bulbs in cars.

I also discovered www.superbrightleds.com

At the time I owned two courier work vans (white :) and my 928 Porsche.

I was having problems on a couple of fronts:

- VAN stop/tail/turn/cabin bulb filament failure mainly because of vibration/shock. Several per year.

- VAN - power consumption - several days of wet weather operation with everything ON would see a decline in battery state. (Yes ... I know ... later ok?)

- 928 - weekend use - parked with a door accidentally ajar and several days later - a very cactussed battery. Augggh!

Advantages as I saw them:

- no filaments to fail.
- good, focussed, light output
- less than a tenth of the incandescent power consumption.
- very cost benefit afforable.
- instant on/off operation.

Result:

- VANS - dozens of brake/indicator applications/day: consumption reduced from 21W (=2A) to 100-200mA per application: meant that the battery could recover its charge each day operating with everything else ON.

- 928 Porsche - LED cabin lights - leave a cabin door open for a week - no problem. Other brake/turn/reversing light advantages: see above.

My R1100S: since I can't leave one of its doors ajar (as it's usually a bottle .... ahhh harrr haarr hahahaha) the focus turns to other aspects ....

... VIZ --- getting your brake/turn intentions squarely in the EYES of MOTORISTS ! ! ! and others.

-- LED lamps can be bought with a range of divergent viewing angles and intensities, but for me the latest CREE or Q intensity upgrades swamp all other divergence considerations - viz - they're so bl***y bright not much else matters! Top $$$ btw

This site is by far the best/most reliable/technically accurate/helpful site I've found.

I have just purchased: turn indicator:

- https://www.superbrightleds.com/moreinf ... r-led/805/

and stop/tail:

https://www.superbrightleds.com/moreinf ... r-led/806/

IMHO this is a site well worth browsing not only for your bike lamp needs but also for for those of your car.

Cheers

John C.

I reckon the greatest aid to road safety would be if cars had these fitted

Image

My tail light and pilot lights in my F650, R11S and R80RS are all fitted with led bulbs, I can't fit them in the KGT as the Canbus would show a fault.

precisely, I'd guarantee once the 1st years lemming effect for the intelligence challenged took effect, otherwise known as Darwinism, the survivors would learn to drive a lot more carefully for subsequent years :)

Steve,

I used to use these or something very similar on my late lamented K1300S with no ill effect?

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CANBUS-501-W5 ... 337b453347

Hope that helps?

Best regards,

David

Hi David, thanks for that. I had considered replacing the pilot bulbs but .... as it is the old style bulbs are a sort of yellowy old style light where the two Nightbreaker bulbs are ice white, I sort of figure having a difference makes it more noticeable if that makes sense?

Yes that does. On my dear old K1100LT I run a yellow H4 in the headlight with two ice white spotlights below which seem to get noticed reasonably well and do look different so hopefully catches the eye as something diffferent

Best regards,

David

Did ... I've taken it off now, but not until I'd ridden around with additional text on the sticker for a while stating "don't join they're cnuts" :) ... and before anyone's insulted, not the members but the corrupt senior officers that have wheedled their way into a position of power and now block all attempts to question their authority, the can of worms I opened when I questioned them meant lots of officers and members lower down the food chain mailed me with some really really questionable tales of the top boys.

picked them up on ebay as used items, can't recall the price now though. I "think" they were originally from Nippy Normans
