bar backs yes or no

Post by Cliff »

I know its an old chestnut and rapid dog periodically shows up, but bar backs yes or no?

Apart from the obvious easing of weight off the wrist are there any draw-backs such as increasing air-flow into visor as you are now sitting up.

Any advice would be appreciated. Ta muchly Cliff

All of the above really.... The S is at its best (aesthetically and aerodynamically) imo with the bars in the standard position. In recent years I've switched between bars above the yoke and barbacks , then fitted a footpeg lowering kit and it changed my weight distribution sufficiently to allow me remove the barbacks and leave the bars above the top yoke.
I found barbacks great in urban areas helped by the better all round vision but not as good at speed , It's difficult to describe how different they are and how different the bike feels with them , but depending on your build might suit you perfectly.
Raising the bars is enough to cause cold hands( windblast) and buffeting at higher speeds, I never tried a taller screen though...
Currently doing most of my miles on a Transalp so looking at modifying my (almost worthless) S to give a similar ride ( not sure if that's possible) or getting a GS , or a maybe a car ( is it going to be a cold winter? )

I have a set fitted and for me with an old wrist injury they are superb. I also have adjustable pegs so my riding position for me at 5-10 is great. I have read of people having a flighty feel at speed, well its not been an issue for me. As with any change to a bikes riding position it feels a little strange at first....for me a better strange...... Try the bars above the top yoke, it will at most only cost you a set of brake hoses, which if you still have the stock ones is no bad thing to change anyway. If that feels good but you want the bars another inch or so higher and further back you could make that step. I have a MRA vario screen, although i don,t use the top 3-4" adjuster as its no improvement and i have been well into 3 figures many times with no issues, a taller screen is on the list if i could find one that would be an improvement but its not essential...at least not for me.
Hope this helps Bry

Thanks Bry

Yes I have braided hoses but have been reluctant to move the existing bars above the yoke to experiment. I dont think that the original position is too bad but i'm just thinking ahead to a time when i may have to do it through necessity - after-all old age is creeping up on us all and i don't mean JS (too soon?). Coat, I will get.
