Fueling on '07 R1200S

Post by saabowl »

Hi,

New to BMWs and new to Boxertrix. My bike seems to run quite rough low down and needs a fair ammount of throttle to move off etc. It is at present on standard cans but the oringinal owner tells me he had twin race cans fitted and there is evidence of this (dents in tin foil under the seat), he also said he had a y piece that eliminated the cat.

I dont know if its just getting used to the bike, or if it has been mapped to suit race can then not returned to standard.

Any cheap way I can tell? Descriptions of typical throttle response would also be useful.

cheers

Mark

Hello and welcome, good choice of bike you have there :D

Assuming you have no technical problems with the bike I would say the cheapest options would be get BMW to reflash the ECU (Gus paid £30 at Clarks I believe) fits the latest map. Take out all the throttle cable slack at the twist grip, (there is a double cam fitted that gives a very slow initial throttle responce), you could buy an accelorator module £30, tricks the ecu into thinking its colder than it is and squirts more fuel in and low revs. Worked for me.
After that then decat the headers fit tail pipe, pc111 or Hilltop remap (both sound very good options and investments) do a search or look in Boxertech all the info is there.
Phil.

I wonder if the original owner has done something else (at the same time as de-catting and fitting cans) - that he hasn't "undone"?

What's your consumption like? It's not running ritch now - is it?>

Back to BMW dealer for a reflash, methinks - as a first step.

Al :)
If I am ever on life support - Unplug me......
Then plug me back in..........

See if that works .....

Dents in the tin foil - they all have that sir...

Rough at the bottom end ...
First thing I would try is an IACV reset and then a TB balance.
Unfortunately you can't do either on the 1200 motors without diagnostic facilities.

Does it run vibey at higher revs - if so likely to be TB's - if not IACV recalibration might sort it.

You're a but too far away to pop round otherwise I'd have done it for you.

I have an accellerator module for sale if you want to give it a try - does make quite a bit of difference to the performance, but I doubt it would sort out your problem.

Whatever you decide to do I would get the calibration/sync sorted first.

Hi
The 1200 isn't the smoothest bike and do need a fare few revs to get off the mark. Also the throttle has been designed to need lots of movement on initial opening to get going. It's horrible and takes getting used to. I am looking into get something sorted regarding this on my bike. If its your first boxer then I would say its just you getting used to it. As others have said no harm in getting everything checked. When was the bike last serviced and by whom. Mileage on bike?

Thanks all for responding. The bike is at 13000 miles. Serviced at Motorrad March 2011 at 9300 miles. Returning over 50 mpg. Plan is BMW service around October. Still getting used to it, my last bike was a 1966 hard tail triumph chop, prior to that Harleys , so my reference points are all over the place. 12 years since a 'modern' bike a Yamaha trx 850. Think I will get BMW to 'reflash the Ecu' in October. Pops a bit on closed throttle too. Ah character.... Still a cracking bike though.

Sounds like the bike is all in order, has the previous owner messed with it? He fitted a full system, any other mods?

My 12 was serviced last Sept, ecu flashed with the then latest map (don't know if there has been an update since then) but it transformed mine, can't believe yours has an old map now.

This is the cheap mod
http://www.sol2.be/Performance/ENG/Home/index.html

DaveH has a used one, could be well worth a punt, made quite a big difference on mine (fitted at approx 2k miles) now done 15k no problems, also the throttle cable trick, done as soon as I got the bike, did not like the cam one little bit, just helps the initial pulling away, also no probs in over 14k miles.

As has been said, they are a bit lumpy but with these initial mods I think you will get a better bike, enjoy

What I did with mine was adjust all the free play out of the cable, surprisingly makes a difference when pulling away slowly.

I am researching a quick action throttle alternative to get rid of the awful standard throttle.

Thanks but I thought you had sussed how to remove the cam making it a more direct throttle. There was a thread on here where a BMW technician removed a couple of parts from the throttle (somewhere) and it made it linear-but no-one seems to know what or from where!!!

Gus, would the standard 1200 throttle fit an 1100? I'd like to try one to see if it would 'blur' that just-of-the-stop snatchiness my bike still suffers from.

It's all VFR (DCT) round here now. STILL missing my 1100s tho.

I,ve tried to follow the thread on how to do that and gave up! I spoke to mark at BSD and he suggested changing to a complete quick action throttle with new cables to the throttle bodies. I need to confirm it will work with the corrosponding switchgear.

I don't think it would nick. It's the fuelling that's causing your problem.

It's nowhere near as bad as it was before the throttles were balanced m8  but there's still just a 'trace' there.
