Wheel Painting - Powder Coating

How old are they?It was But along with the front mudguard (Ilmberger), the clearcoat seems to have evaporated and left a dull milky finish.
I ask because for quite a while now, all Ilmberger stuff has had a new much improved coating that is UV resistant as well as scratch resistant.
Could I interest sir in a new set of shiny carbon to go with those lovely wheels? Currently at the lowest price as detailed in Bits'n'bobs for sale!

You mean it wasn't UV resistant before ??? I'm not taking my bike out in daylight ever again and I suggest Chris only does night riding as well.sandbar wrote:How old are they?It was But along with the front mudguard (Ilmberger), the clearcoat seems to have evaporated and left a dull milky finish.

It's not how fast you ride, it's how you ride fast.

Joking aside, the answer to your question (referring to general carbon fibre parts) is NO. If you look at the current state of carbon on, for example, Ducati 851/888's (oxymoron alert!!!) that have been used regularly and not had the carbon replaced with later parts, the original carbon has not only gone flat and milky, but also a strange sort of mouldy yellow. Early F1 stuff has tended to go the same way, although long life is not a design criteria in those cases.
I would like to think that Ilmberger have been in the forefront of technological advances in this area. Well I would say that wouldn't I: maybe this should be in 'Boxerbollox' and not 'Boxertech'.
As another aside, it was amazing how many companies at INTERMOT were selling Ilmberger stuff as their own, and were displaying these parts strategically arranged so that the Ilmberger markers inside could not be seen. One or two others had clumsily sprayed over the badges. So we must be doing something right!!
Come on people - buy the things in my SALE. I want to stock up again for next year!
Haven't I got some work that I should be doing instead of writing this stuff - YES!

Do you mean you don't carry a cross or garlic with you when you ride at night? I am amazed!!You mean it wasn't UV resistant before ??? I'm not taking my bike out in daylight ever again and I suggest Chris only does night riding as well.

They're about 2 years old. You could interest me in new ones if they were free

Is it possible to rub them down and re-clearcoat or is the black spray paint coming out again?

I'm sorry. Don't know what you mean. It is probably my fault, but there are a couple of words there that I just do not understand. 'Free' and 'gesture' - sorry mate, just tried to look them up in my dictionary, but they are not there!
Seriously though, I suspect that perfectly normal clear lacquer will do the job. I am in Germany next week so I will ask the question and report back.
Anybody got any more questions they would like me to ask Ilmberger while I am there? Oops - should have added the word reasonable!!

Hi Paul,
Thanks for the info....I will have to save me penny's and order one.
I'm only just off the A127 at Kent Elms.
I only got the bike in May, its a 99 in Black with 107,000 miles on the clock, apart with the little hick up with the front brakes, she runs like clockwork.......must get the wheels powder coated. I used a firm in Bowler Croft Basildon to powder coat a kart chassis for me a few years back, I will give them a ring.
Thanks again
Rick

we had our wheels powder coated at bournes in Birmingham they also did foot rests and hangers mine pearl red hers pearl purple like the cadburys rapper looks great on yellow bike but photos turn out blue.£70 We left wheel bearings in and bought new ones for piece off mind.Just make sure they mask up surfaces.
Only one powder coater I'd recommend, Tim Hayes of Flow Plant Manufacturing, South Newton (Salisbury) 01722 744107. Best there is
Price examples as I aint had any wheels done:
1 x Land Rover 109" LWB Chassis shot blasted and Satin Black Powder Coated £150
1 x Egli-Vincent Racing Frame and Swingarm, £40
Everything black on a Vincent HRD, £120
cheapest and the best, he's an ex-biker so know's how to mask wheels
oh, and if it's alloy he tends to acid etch them before coating to promote longetivity, which very few others do
