tank is full.
fuel light comes on / goes off again whenever it feels like it.

Series 9220 in the wiring diagram. Shows simple switch, part of float gauge, up to bulb via the dial needle damping unit. If all the other gauges/bulbs are ok, I would suspect the float switch. Ride it out for a couple of tankfulls, might clear itself. Otherwise it will be a case of going to the float switch and manually pulling it about to try to clear the fault. Had this problem in the car last year, giving the unit a shake around cleared it.

But surely if the float switch is sticking it would stick in the 'up' position ie when the tank is full and the light would never come on.
This is intermittent - and on a full tank, so the float shouldn't be able to get to the 'sticking on' level.??
But if i did 'pull it about' is that easy or is it filler off/pump out etc etc?

You are right, float must be sticking at low level for the light to come on. The only true way to check it all is pump plate off. That's why I suggested trying to ride it out. As far as I can tell, low fuel 'makes' the circuit to light the lamp; this thinking clears the broken wire idea. Unless a wire has chaffed against a metal frame somewhere and is 'making' a circuit through earth. Not sure of the polarity of that wiring loop.
