the easy way round- fitting a garmin zumo 550

Post by das bike u1100s »

can any trixters who have actually fitted a sat nav to a 2004 r1100s bcr, yup the one with the wing mirrors on the handle bars let me know the set up that actually worked for them.
Having trawled through the many links it would be nice to hear what actually did the job, without being left with a pile of ram mounts that didn't quite fit!
Cheers

I use a ram-mount mounted from the Ram-replacement Clutch reservoir cover.

It handles Quest, 2610, Zumo adequately and allows the unit to be positioned towards the left hand side (for operation) and clear of your view of the bike instruments.

Alternatively - there is a RAM ball mount that fits down the hole which is exposed when you pry off the BMW badge from the yoke centre.

(There are a few threads with pics on this site of all the installations)

i did look at most threads on this site, the photos did justice but i was left with the a slight doubt as to- wether they would clear the screen when turning or find the wing mirrors get in the way when mounted.
i liked the look of the clutch mount as it appeared to be the most easy to fit But did it affect the handling or just get in the way whilst riding.
I sense you have this mount fitted, would you reconmend it to a first time sat nav user? i would still rather be in the q for a OS map but age is creeping up!

I fitted what's basically a ball with a bracket and a hole to the ST. Uses the mirror to clamp it in place, when my Zumo & cradle is off the bike the ball is pretty much non noticable,

Not to a BCR, but it was the comment you made about the mirrors, that prompted me to mention my fitting method.

I do favour the RAM mount from the clutch reservoir cover, and think that anyone that says it affects the handling - is deluding themselves.

Does it foul the screen on full lock? Yes if you position it wrongly, but it just takes a moment's adjustment to fit it correctly.

If you go for a RAM clutchcover mount - you may want to experiment with different ram arm lengths. I prefer the shortest of the arms, but some will prefer to bring the unit closer to them and require the longer arm.

If you came to Wales in April - you would probably see every combination possible.................

I got mine from autocom at the nec show, £399 plus a cashback voucher for £50, but I think that was a show special offer. It did come with the very latest 2008 mapping too! the guys on the garmin stand pointed me to autocom as a recommended supplier.

RAM< mount on 2004 BCR

Post by JEB »

I have managed to fit a ram mount, the one with the flat circular plate between the steering head and the damper knob onto the frame. It required cutting part of the plate away and making a spacer out of a scrap piece of aluminium to take up the shape of the frame.
Using the standard arm the SPIII sits at the right heigt to miss a tankbag and does not impair me seeing the clocks. I use a touratech mount but that should not matter.

Fairly innovative, Jeb :D

I guess it is screwed into the frame?

Ram Mount on 2004 BCR

Post by JEB »

Yes a single countersunk fixing into the aluminium plate then four tapped screws from the RAM mount into the aluminium plate.
I find it works well.
