I have expressed an interest in an old 1100gs been sold privately described as excellent. I need it to meet touring commitments next year as the wife wont come on the BCR anymore due to the extent of the damage suffered at Donnington recently and as the repair and restoration is going to be expensive the 1200 GSA is out of the question for the time being It sounds a lot of bike for little money with reasonable mileage (45k) It may be the perfect low cost tourer for us. What do you think gentlemen? Chris.

Pre 97? i think bikes were prone to gearbox issues but the 1100 is a cracking thing.
Ive owned an 1100, 2 1150s and a 1200 and the 1100 is the most solid.
Theres one down here advertised on ukgser for approx 2350 I think, with 42k on it

I had a 1994 1100 - Fantastic bike apart from the dodgy gearbox which kept throwing me out of 3rd.

The previous owner had spent £700 trying to fix this without success...

Get one of the latest ones and your on a winner.

I had a P reg R1100S for 3 years and liked it .

Clutch went at 18000 miles and ABS wouldn't set unless battery was fully charged.

I've owned 2 R1100R's; the first of which was my first BMW - so in a round about way you can blame that bike for the existence of this forum Did over 30k on it in 14 months and loved every minute of it.

The R was really a GS on short legs so the motor/gearbox/brakes etc are identical. I reckon these older bikes (bearing in mind Yogi's caveat re the gearbox issues) are better built beasts than the 1150 series and beyond. If I could find a nice 11GS I reckon I'd buy it.

All the earlier oil heads suffer from poor gearboxes. The post 1998 models are the ones to go for when the gearboxes were upgraded.

You want a low cost traillie/tourer,have a look at an Africa Twin,you can buy e'm for good money nowhere days,and you don't have to worry about the clutch or gearbox dropping out of e'm.

The R1100GS is without a doubt the best, fastest, most reliable, sexiest, best handling bike in the known universe. I've got a 1998 and in 55,000 miles have changed the clutch, the clutch actuator arm snapped and I've had 3 blown bulbs. Every time I get on it I find myself grinning like a loon after the first mile. I was contemplating a 1200GS, but having ridden quite a few of them have decided that it's no quicker or better handling than mineand isn't as reliable. So I got an F800ST instead and kept the GS. I've have let it be known that I wish to be buried with it.

And it's better-looking than the 1200GS as well. (the 1150 has a prettier front end, but apart from that it's a slug)

Cheers Gentlemen R1100gs it is then although i have pondered an africa twin, (Winger) Varadero and saw recently an R100gs Paris Dakar wi loads a bling on it. I am looking at two next Sat one in Wakefield and the other in Chesire The cheaper one has less miles (30k) a 97 but has had more owners the excellent one has had only two owners and has 45k ont clock (a 95) nice colour scheme as well black with yellow seat. (wont see much of that then when our lass is on it)

Grommit, do you work? 30k in 14months? and i thought I was hard core.
