Hi All

I am new to your forum and just recently bought myself a 2005 BMW R1100S and have a question for you

I am quite new to the BMW world, But quite old to the biking world. I have been riding bikes for quite a number of years (Mostly Crouch Rockets) and decided that it was time to join the Distinguished group of gentlemen and bought myself a BMW.

Now my Question

We had the 25 annual TOY RUN on the 25th November 2007. This is when all motorcyclists get together and Give toys to Needy Children all over the country This is one of the largest Motorcycle events in the world supporting some 50000 motorcycles getting together all over the country for this event.

Well you can imagine how that looks on the roads. And what fun.

OK so i am putting along on my BMW at a very low speed cause there is so much congestion and it is blistering hot day. When my Oil pressure light comes on. So i pull off not wanting to do any damage and wait about 15 min before trying again. about another 20min later the Oil Pressure light comes on again and once again i pull of to let her cool down. Finally i get to the venue and all is fine. On my way home that afternoon bike ran fine no Little red light coming on.

I know it is a Air and Oil Cooled motor but should it have got so hot that i would lose pressure. and do you think i would have done any damage.

Thanks R1100S

Here is a pic of my BMW

Thanks in advance for your input

Thanks for the input Harry Lime.
Here in SA BMW recommends that we run a Multi-grade oil 20W-40. So i don't know if a thicker SAE 40 oil would be better.

In Summer the temp here can reach around 95 degrees Fahrenheit. And our winters are around 68 degrees Fahrenheit.

So i wounder if i should try a thicker Oil. Does anyone have an opinion on this.

I don't have an answer to your problem Revilo but I like your bike. Very tidy. I love that finish on the wheels. I may have to do mine some time.

I am sure there will be some more guys along soon to help you out here, who are far more learned on this subject. But there are a hundreds of threads on the site about engine oil.

The opinions that I have read on the site is that 20w-50 is a minimum must have, and this is for 'UK weather' where it rains all the time and doesn't get much above 78 degrees during the summer! So I would imagine that this would be the same for you too.

Not sure about a whether a higher viscosity would work or be any good, but I think I have seen a 10w-60 or a 0w-60 somewhere - I believe BMW specify this for their M Series cars, (may have been on the Castrol or Mobil web-site). Not sure if this is the way to go though??

Wait for what others may have to say before doing anything.

@ Revilo

As far as I know BMW had and has probs with the oil pressure switch at least concerning some models. Latest news I heard even with a R1200S. In german forums the opinion dominates nothing goes wrong with 20W-50 (weather in Germany!). There's no need to fill in synthetic oil at all. That's what I do.
Hope it helps a little bit.
