I purchased a brand new set of lower fork legs from Rydales "getting out of bikes" stock.... the were sold as R1100S.

I noticed when checking the internals there is a steel lower ring (although it does not come out..... there are then 4 tubes of plastic, then another steel ring. On top of this goes the oil seal and then dust cover.

Looking at the manuals and the fiche at www.realoem/bmw, it only shows 3 plastic tubes. The manual shows 4 for the RT.

Obviously I will not know what my existing legs hold until I take them off... but I just wanted to check with you guys first.


ALSO... I remember some time back reading a thread about the quantity of fork oil required for each leg..... someone mentioned they had put the "manual" amount in and it was like a rock.... then discovered that this amount was incorrectly printed... Can you confirm the proper amount required for each leg.

When I renewed the fork seals I had to empty the oil out and it looked more than the amount in the manual and so had SLM check with BMW direct and BMW confirmed that the correct quantity is 0.49 lts per leg at least that is the case for 2001 bikes onwards.

Ummm, my service manual says only 0.17lt per leg, thats a 2000 model mind, big difference though dont ya think??

I have run a search for the thread...(Winger comes to mind.. but I might be wrong) but the .49l steve mentions was later found to be way too much if my memory serves me well....... Hence my query. The oil does not do any damping obviously but merely keeps all the works loose.... however too much and things start to get hard.

Ermmmm!!! it was me,when i fitted Boxerpans old style forks on his later S,(the only ones the AP kit fit)about an hour later of trying to fit a quart into a pint pot and oil pissing everywere the penny dropped!!!

The early forks take a lot less,i'd have to check quantities,what happened i measured the oil taken out of Boxerpans forks assumed i'd put the same amount into the older one's!! wrong!!!

According to my Haynes manual, which covers Boxer 4 valve twins '93 - '04, states the following:

1150RT - 0.45 litre
1100S - 0.17 litre
all other models - 0.47 litre

I think you'll find it's 0.17 for the early models(98/99) but the later ones use a lot more which rings true with 0.47,but unless a fork has a major leak,just measure it,although i did find you need to tip the fork up at angle and let it drain of it own accord,it takes a while.

Both Haynes and Clymer say .17 for the 1100S regardless of year????????

I did a seal a few weeks ago.
As it was explained to me, as you look at the old seal there is a plastic packer underneath that looks like waste piping. If this is in place the oil quantity is 170ml.
If this packer is missing the oil quantity is larger to compensate. 210ml

Just replaced the legs seals dust cover etc etc..... Took out 490ml from each leg... so that what went back in.

Manaual says .17 for the 2003 ?????????
