Which one GS1200/Adventurer

Post by eggcup »

I need some advice about whether to go for GS1200 or the Adventurer has anyone had experience with both I will be part Xing the BCR in.
Also what extras are worth having and those that are just bling.
Looking at an Adventurer with chrome exhausts/computor/HG/FogL/White indicaor lenses/alarm.

Hi

I have a 1200gs and looked at possibly changing it, so tried an ADV for a couple of hours, which was enough. for me to understand the advantages of each:

So 1200GS:

Expanding panniers are great for town work (can be fitted to ADV)
Manageable seat height, and reasonable nimble.
Bit noisy with standard screen.

ADV

Great fuel range
Less wind noise/buffeting
Very high seat, and pretty unwieldy with a full tank.

Just my 5p worth, hope that helps.

could'nt embelish that a bit Ruffy.
The BCR does a good job of everything and im well pleased but the screen is just doing my head in literaly Ive got the taller screen on but thats no worse or better than the standard fast motorway work is a real headache and spoils a lovely bike.
The screen on the Adventurer is bliss even rev'd out in top it felt like 30mph, it handels as well as the BCR so what are the real downsides apart from the poor finish (the one I looked at was a year old with 2500 on but looked 4years with 10K).

Can't speak for the "baby" GS 1200, as I went straight to the Adventure.

The Adventure does just about everything well, and is remarkably nimble once moving.

I do find that I don't filter with the same confidence, as my low speed stability is a bit shaky, (could be the same on a GS1200?), but it is an imposing site in peoples' mirrors -so they generally give you lots of room.

You can load it up with as much luggage as you can think of, without barely noticing

Seat height isn't a great issue for me (5' 10") and I can "almost" get both feet flat on the ground, but you have to be careful if you stop on a LH camber - as that can catch you out.

Personally - I would go for the Adventure, but ensure that it has the NON-Servo brakes - they can be a bit of a pain and produce low-speed brake snatch :(

This is where I found the real difference between the two, the GS1200 being much easier at low speed. It may be something you get used to.

As Bob says you won't be disappoimnted with either.

Crikey! Still waters run deep there, Stuart - we hardly know each other!

Only 31" , so it was a surprise when I found how close I was to both feet securely planted (not wearing the high-heels that day, either - before Yogi comments  )

Blackall... sorry to get so personal   I am also looking at the adv. but at 890/910 mm seat height.... Jees. :!:

I'm the same height as you.. actually 5" 10.5" (that half inch makes a difference, Vicar) with a 31" I/L, so I was pleased to hear your comments.

I sat on a "baby" GS the other day and although I did not check the settings , pre-load etc, I could only manage tip toes.... the ADV is suppose to be higher... so I was quite concerned. The Spanish dealer I was at did not have a ADV in.. so tht will have to wait.

Did you have a lowered seat or was it std. ADV.....?? I did notice it sank down much more that the S simply by siting it...(obviously) but it was still a struggle??

Cheers

actually I have'nt made my mind up yet as I'm likely to be spending 10k I'm just picking a few sensible brains for an honest opinion of the likely short comings of either bike.
Ive got a 33'' inside leg and the BCR is actully taller due to the fact that theres no give when you sit on the bike where as the GS has softer suspension.
Back to back the only major difference is in the screen which on the ADV was much better I havent managed to ride the ADV with the full 33litres loaded most test bikes are running on fumes much of the time.
Thanks for all your comments

Stuart - The seat has a couple of positions, and mine is on the lowest setting - maybe that is the difference?

It does sag more than the BCR, when you sit on it - but nothing excessive.

I'll nip out tomorrow and take a pic, just to show how close it is to flat-foot.

I've just bought a Wunderlich lowered seat from a fella on another site, but that is really cos the standard seat makes my bumb numb after a couple of hours :?

The Adventure screen is far better than the "Baby GS" too :)

Get the Adventure.............. you'll not regret it! :D

I've moved several ADV's for the trade and press just recently, and see a lot of e'm on the road, far more presence than the stocker, but talk about one big bastard,if your under 6ft or do any amount of town riding, certainly require a certain amount of thought before buying one, although the thing that struck me everytime i've moved one,how light they are, considering the size, but 33 liter tank who's got an arse that goes that far!!!
