GS1200 Probs

Post by timbox2 »

sort of off topic as regards to 1100s but i was interested if anybody else with 12 GS's had the same probs as I ws told about yesterday.
Saw an old mate yesterday, who the last time I saw him had a 1200, he pulled up on an old 1150 Adv.

"What happened to the 12", I asked.

F... that he said, accident waiting to happen, and then went on to tell me about all the probs about losing drive on the clutch( Oil seal prob) to the numerous cutting out incidents, sometimes at high speed with very interesting( No frightening) results.

Didnt trust the thing in the end and swapped it back for an 1150,

Does this ring true for anybody or did he get the friday afternoon bike which I know sometimes happens with any make of machine?

Rings absolutely true for me.
Ibought a 9k mile bike 3 months ago and have sold it. Will get an 1150 again tho one day.
My 12 had abs faure, all sorts of warning lights, servo falure, lutch slipoped one day really badly but nt since. Put me right off, but when they are running well they are ace.

I get the impression that the later ones are better. Mine is exactly a year old next week, 20k miles and I've had one heated grip fail - nothing else at all.

Maybe I've been lucky.

Yes archie I think you are right
The 2004 up to 2006 are mainly to blame, however there are a number of owners on UKGSER who are having numerous problems even on newer bikes

Mine is an 'old' 2006 - before body work change that menat you didn't have to attack it with aknife to fit a top box, registered in Oct. Immediate rear drive seal seal failure  and it's always had slight weeping on the front fork oil seals :( . Not good enough for a rare red one.
Now at 5,500 miles seals will be fixed at 6,000 service and no other problems to date - touch wood etc etc.

Chris has a 2004 that has had afair few things go wrong, but can't remmber what exactly. Then again it is a yellow one so only to be expected.

Cheers
