2000+ front callipers.... thats why they're so different!!!!

anybody ever looked at the back of the callipers for 2000+ bikes...... well looking at my feb 2003 EVO callipers yesterday while putting some more stainless on my bike (aint done mine yet!) and what should I see on the back of the calliper....... TOKICO (sp?).

Did Mr. Brembo have a little tiff with Mr. BMW by chance........ :D

No, BMW probably got the Tokico's cheap :roll:

They didn't believe me on the Rockster forum when I told them about a month ago.

To my mind, the quality is inferior. My Tokicos had all furred up inside seizing the pads near solid. I had to remove the caliper and use a large screwdriver to prize the pads out. And that was on a 3 month old demo bike.

The edges of the pads rub directly against the machined alloy edges of the caliper. Unfortunately, the pads are copper backed so with a bit of salt water you get some excellent electrolytic acion.

The Brembos used to have stainless steel inserts that the end of the pads located in and slid against. Had no problems with them on teh K12 even after 2 winters of daily use.

basically I've gone from a British bike with inferior japanese parts on to a Bavarian bike with inferior japanese parts on :? not happy, the reason I brought it was I was hoping for ten years out of it...... looks like it may go the same way as every Japanese bike :cry:

Rob, they still charge a premium tho on the pretence that you're, "buying quality" :roll:


My mates R1150R had the Tokico calipers, compared to the original Brembos they're a poor substitute . I think it's definately a case of economy on the part of good old BMdubblya............Build quality my arse :shock:

The brakes/fork lowers changed for December 2000 production from the old style to Brembo calipers. This mid type are pretty good imho.
Not sure when they changed again to Tokikos but I guess it was when they went power assisted (last year?)

I have Tokicos on my ZXR400 - they're very good brakes, but need a little more maintanance than maybe the older BM ones do (never had experience of them).

Which I agree is a bad thing for a "do it all/year round" bike. :(

All you need to do though is figure out which Jap bike the callipers match and you could find the prices of seals/pads are pretty low. :)

That would be about right Rob, Ian's (my mate) 1150R was a late 2002 model with the power assisted brakes. He only had the bike for about 9 months, it had the worst surge problem I've ever come across. Dealer couldn't sort it, he had it to independent tuning guys and they couldn't sort it. he even had a go himself but it was still a pig to ride. Got rid of it in desperation, and vowed he'd never have another BeeEm. (he loves riding my S tho' :lol: )

ah well, loks like my 2k mile service attitude will have to be every fortnight then through the winter :? shall contact CW in a bit and see what they know about these Tokico's and whether the pisotns are plated cheese or proper stainless. Possibly looks like the stainless pad pin drawing is coming out of retirement for production then :)

The funny thing is that the K1200RS uses brembo calipers as part of the Evo ABS. I haven't tried it, but they look directly swappable.

Perhaps its like the Peugeot/Citroen/Renault scenareo where they fit whatever is cheapest that fits for any particular production run.
