It seems to me there has been an increase recently in the number of drivers giong through the lights on the last dregs of the amber (perhaps on early red?). Anyone else noticed this?

This is very much the case in London - although 'amber' means 'keep going' and red is 'keep going and give 2-fingers to the person (who had right of way due to being on green) who's nearly run into the side them'.

I'm little doubt we've all 'run an amber' at some time or other, but down here it's getting to the point where the lights are just a decoration.

This was a problem a few years ago at certain lights in Edinburgh, resulting in a number of accidents. The cooncil solved it by putting up cameras. In this instance I have no problem with the cameras as it was a genuine safety issue.

Embra cooncil are slacking. They used to have a camera at the junction of Drum Brae and Queensferry Rd. It was well known for light-jumping accidents, but the last time I drove through there I noticed the camera was gone.

I am in total agreement with your sentiments, but that phrase is not accurate. There is no right of way. I think you will find that the Highway Code says that you can go if it is safe to do so.

There was a very famous case many years ago where a guy, who went on the green, hit and killed the driver who was "amber gambling" and was found to be in the wrong, prosecuted, and found guilty of dangerous driving

I'll admit the phrase isn't wholly accurate (and after I'd typed it I realised so) then again the Highway Code isn't law, which has always seemed a bit 'eh?' in my humble opinion. That's the trouble these days - get a top notch lawyer, your example is a good one of such, and black suddenly becomes white etc.
