Help

is this possible without dealership involvement? any cheats, tricks or can anyone lend me a Dr. Who sonic screwdriver? What would appear to be relatively do-able to Mr Average practical man looks more involved when referring to Clymer and BMW workshop manual - special tool needed? Do not know why mine started to uncoil like a granny knitted pullover in the first instance so i must follow instructions to adjust and tension correctly. Going to Germany next week should I book it in? How far will a nylon stocking get me? Please help missus is giving me grief.

Thanks Gentlemen, I have checked it out , pleasantly to my suprise i had figured that one out for myself:shock: but i am still concerned about adjusting and tensioning correctly so that the new belt will last as long as they say it should 36k miles. I will try this cheat and then after Germany will bottom it in its entirety and will tell you how i got on. Interestingly my wifes diagnosis of why the belt gave up was that the idiot riding it insists on spannerinit on trackdays.... women honestly, what do they know?

No joy with belt. there is no way this belt motorworks have supplied me with will turn on to crank pulley without going through slackening off alternator, tensioning and adjustment procedures (fuel tank has to come off for that) I am certain the belt is wrong. Their part no ENA42088, description on belt, Contitech Multirib 4PK 590. ????

Should the belt not be 4PK 611 ,that's what I fit to my bike in the "Bailey manner". The belt you have is (obviously) 21mm shorter.

You are both correct. 611 is for pre 03 bikes after 03 it is 590 and Bailey method will not work with this belt so unfortunately chaps it is tank off slacken 3 mount bolts alternator drops, fit belt re tension from rear with torque wrench. Incidentally i have spoken with mw and they have double checked identitys (i had to supply chassis no to prove it was an 04 bike that i had) funnily enough the belt that came off was a 592!! Boxerbollox or what?. So do dealers actually do this palava or do they Bailey it with a larger belt? Any post 03 1100s out there with replacement dealer fitted belts ? and what number are they? bet they are 611!! I have a 590 in my possesion but I have also ordered a 611(as in thread) to "Bailey it" for my Ring trip next week as short term measure. Will let you know how i get on (if i survive)

Chris.
Count yourself lucky you don't have abs

The first time I changed the belt I had the tank off anyway (not
that difficult imo) but immediately saw the error of my ways and subscribed to the Bailey method. From memory there was much more than tank removal needed to adjust the belt........ (I must have another look next time) although i'm not familiar with the '03 model .

ABS, ? Hmmn Just something else to go wrong and another oppurtunity for the dealers? Who needs it anyway? I can crash without touching the brakes!!! That said for roadside repairs 03 onwards 1100s carry a 611 belt. Mine is now on bike for remainder of season pre winter restoration.
Thanks to everyone who offered their experiences and knowledge.
Chris.
