Brake Piston Withdrawal

Post by Bruno »

I have a 2002 S with ABS; the type with the washing machine pump sound effect. I'd like to replace the front brake pads. Can I just push the pistons back into the caliper bodies to allow room for the new thicker pads, or will that mess up the ABS in some devious way?

Ta,
Mark
Why do cheap bikes never end up that way?

Push away old chum. No damage will be done. I usually lever the pistons back by inserting a screwdriver between the old worn out pads and levering them apart. Obviously don't try this without the old pads in situ, since you'll damage the pistons.

Paul.
You really need only two tools: WD-40 and duct tape. If it doesn't move and it should, use WD-40. If it moves and shouldn't, use the tape.

I would recommend exercising the callipers while they are off. Leave a broad blade screwdriver between the old pads with the calliper off the fork leg. Pump the brake lever to push out the four pots, pinching the screwdriver between the old pads, then twist the screwdriver to push the pots back into their seats. Repeat until all the pots come out evenly, together. Then fit new pads, remount the calliper and repeat on the other side. I find my old Brembos stick and have to do this a couple of times a year.
