Advice please. Recently I've noticed when going over bumps/dips I hear a loud clonk from the back end. Had a good look round, nothing loose, leaking, sagging, scraping, sidestand seems ok. Can't replicate it by bouncing the bike at standstill. Had a look round the Forum, could it be the cat or drive related? Anything I should be worrying about?
Cheers. Glenn.
Paul:
Don't think so, not that kind of 'clonk'..? It's quite loud, and - maybe my imagination - getting louder?
Oyster:
Maybe? But I can't replicate it at standstill or around <10mph.
I'm taking it a bit cautiously 'til I know what it is, so it's hard to know whether the handling is particularly affected. We had a good (albeit clonky!) run to/from Cadwell today though.
Tripe:
Sidestand only and the stop is fine. No sign of it rubbing against the bellypan either. Had my mates take a look on the ride out today, nothing obvious to them on the move.
If you still have the cat then I would not think it possible that the cans have slipped off the mounting posts the way they might do with a y-piece. If you cannot move anything loose by hand, then I would suggest the next most likely thing, given that you mention bumps/dips is that the shock has lost its damping. At a standstill the spring still has enough effect to avoid bottoming out, but pick up the pace and the forces involved allow it to compress and extend at considerable rates with no damping to slow things down.
Thanks r550s & Me-109. Got the bike booked for a service on the 18th. Let's hope it holds out 'til then...
I'll let you know the outcome...
Cheers. Glenn
